Get Rid of Hair Loss Once and For All

It’s very alarming to see patches of bald areas in the head. Losing hair is not only common to the aging population but also to younger men and women with different cases and conditions. Just as there are a variety of factors responsible for the abnormal shedding of hair, so are the number and types of treatment for hair loss. With the recent advancements in technology and medicine, there are a number of ways to say bye-bye to losing that crowning glory before old age.

Without Prescriptions

Some treatments can be bought over the counter and don’t need prescriptions from dermatologists and other medical professionals. These include Minoxidil and laser devices.

Minoxidil is a lotion that is spread over the scalp area. It’s available in two solutions: 2% and 5%. Both do wonders in preventing the thinning of hair and in stimulating its regrowth. Just like any other treatments, at least 3-4 months is needed to see the effects. Once stopped, the balding process will resume. The stronger version, the 5% formulation, is sometimes used in very severe cases of hair loss. With its higher concentration, some side effects may also be experienced such as itchiness and dryness. Users need not to worry about the efficiency of this product because it’s certified by the U.S. Food and Drugs Association (FDA).

Laser devices don’t undergo rigorous screening, classifying them as non-prescription treatments. Devices that emit laser light such as brushes and combs may help in stimulating regrowth of hair. No researches and claims have yet been made regarding the effectiveness of using these products to prevent hair loss.

With Prescriptions

Other drugs suggested as treatment for hair loss need the appropriate prescription from professionals. These drugs may do more harm than good if not taken in the required dosages. These medications include Finasteride and Corticosteroid.

Finasteride comes in a tablet form that is prescribed to be taken everyday. It works by preventing the conversion of the hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is responsible for making the hair follicles thinner, which makes the shedding of hair more possible. Preventing DHT in the system will help the follicles maintain its regular size and prevent unusual shedding of the strands.

Its effects can be seen with at least 3-6 months of use. It’s also believed to increase the number of hair (hair count) with continued use. Figures regarding its effect in the hair count include a 10% increase with short-term use and 24% increase with long-term use. Once treatment is stopped, hair will stop growing after a 6 to 12-month period.

Corticosteroid is prescribed for people whose hair loss is caused by inflammation inside the body. This drug works by counter-attacking these infection-causing bacteria that causes hair loss.

Other Procedures

Other treatments for hair loss include hair transplantation, scalp reduction, scalp expansion, and scalp flaps.

Hair transplantation consists of getting healthy parts of the scalp and planting them on the bald areas. Scalp reduction removes the bald scalp completely and replaces it with a brand new healthy scalp through surgery. Scalp expansion is done by inserting a device under the scalp for 3-4 weeks to stretch the skin. And lastly, scalp flaps are segments of the scalp with hair that are moved and placed where they are needed.

Different types of treatments are available for the different cases and causes of hair loss in both men and women.
