How Digital Signage is Used in the Workplace

Digital signage is an inexpensive and highly customisable method of showing digital content for advertising or informational purposes. It can range from one LCD (or Plasma) screen displaying content to many screens installed throughout a building. A group of screens can be positioned together to create one large display, too.

LCD screens can show different content which can be relevant to the area that the screen is being displayed in, or a variety of different content can be shown. This content can be static images, animations, moving graphics or even multimedia videos with sound. With such a variety of uses, digital signage can be an effective and dynamic addition to a workplace.

A popular reason for using digital signage in the workplace is to positively promote a corporation. Corporate news, upcoming events or even just the company logo can be displayed. This can give a professional and impressive workplace atmosphere to visitors and potential clients. For example, a workplace could show a corporate video in the lobby of its building for visiting clients to watch while they are waiting to be seen.

Digital signage can also be beneficial to staff. As the content can be changed quickly and easily, updating the signage can be a more effective method than, for example, sending a memo or a reminder to an entire department. Instead, a message can be displayed on that department\’s digital signs. LCD screens can also be used to show if a room has been booked for a certain time or as a reminder that there is a staff meeting at the end of the day. Unlike a memo or email which may be read once and then forgotten about, digital signage can be used as a constant reminder.

On a much larger scale, corporations with several branches across the country can display corporate wide notifications. Notifications such as internal vacancies or quarterly reports can be shown to all its branches at once. Also, corporations which rely on worldwide news, such as financial and journalism sectors, may find digital signage useful to display rolling news channels. One screen can be split to show several channels at once, or several screens can be used to show a channel each. This allows the news to be viewed by staff in a fairly unobtrusive manner.

As well as office environments, digital signage can be used effectively in warehouses and on factory floors. Although all employees may have received health and safety training in such a workplace, simple safety reminders to employees could potentially avoid hazardous situations. For example, displaying that part of a warehouse is a \’Hard hat area\’ and showing precautions that must be taken in such areas.

In retail or service orientated businesses, digital signage can be used to interact with customers. Where a queuing systems is in place, screens can be used to direct customers to empty kiosks or tills. This saves employees having to direct customers themselves. In hospitality businesses, a LCD screen can also be used to make customers aware of anticipated waiting times.
