How to Dress Like a Goth

Dressing like a goth is helped by tapping into the various themes that influence the style, which can range from 19th Century romantic poets to vampire fantasies. The stereotypical goth look consists of a pale face, accentuated by black clothes and dark make-up. The goth look can be much more creative than that however.

Music stars have also been very influential in how the goth look is defined, with fans of particular artists dressing in a similar way to goth performers. In the early 1980s Adam Ant reflected the romantic goth look, while Gary Numan reflected the darker, more horror-influenced style.

People who adopt the goth style are often perceived as being gloomy, but elements of the goth look are the antithesis of this. Frilly blouses and shirts are a good example of a goth being influenced by the romantic style. Colours such as dark reds, purples and blues can also be utilized for a romantic gothic look. Combined with a white frilly shirt or blouse a dark velvet jacket will make for an interesting contrast.

Goth make-up, influenced by horror movies, should be very dark and black eyeliner is one of the key parts of creating this type of look. Very dark red, purple, or black lipstick is also part of the conventional goth horror look. Both the dark eyeliner and dark lipstick help to create a strong contrast with even a face that is not very pale. Creating the pale look is done by the use of white powder, though just not applying blusher can help create a pallid appearance.

Romantic heroines were often considered pale and interesting, though the make-up to create this look can be lighter than for the horror- inspired style. Colours can be mixed up for eye make-up, with purple or blue mascara and black eyeliner.

Nails should be painted in very dark colours, such as dark reds and dark blues. Pink is definitely a no-go area for nails when trying to achieve the authentic goth look.

Imagery on t-shirts and general tops can underline the goth look. Skulls are ideal for the horror-influenced goth and angels are a good choice, when creating a romantic goth appearance. Black dresses and black skirts for women and black jeans for men are aspects of the goth look that are appropriate for both romantic and horror goth styles. For women, a black basque can be worn to produce a sexy goth look. Black velvet jackets are also appropriate for women as are frock coats for men. Goth footwear can range from knee-high boots to pointed witch shoes and simple tennis shoes.

A very important part of looking the part as a goth is the wearing of silver jewelry. Black studded collars are worn by males and females and studded bracelets are often worn by male goths, who are also inclined to wear silver rings on their fingers.

Hairstyles for goths should normally involve straight hair. Dark is the preferred colour, but goth hairstyles have evolved and pink streaks are now accepted as part of the goth look.
