How to Make Door Hangers Look Like a Modern Idea

We always like to go back and look at marketing ideas which have been around for a long time, even though they look like they were invented in the old days. We’ve talked about post cards on this site numerous times, and how this eighteenth century invention not only survives but thrives. Another anachronism that doesn’t seem to want to give up the ghost is the door hanger.

There is a reason for that: it’s a very targeted approach to marketing. When you use door hangers, you know exactly who your target market is, down to the very street addresses. It’s pretty much the opposite of broadcast marketing, which is completely scattershot in nature. With a direct approach to marketing you are sure to reach your target market who will hopefully purchase your product or service. There is nothing better than directly communicating with your consumers who are loyal to your brand.

Using door hangers also has the advantage of being a very inexpensive way to get the word out. The cost of the door hangers themselves is not high – they are pennies each. And the distribution method is pretty inexpensive too: basic shoe leather. If you are the proprietor of the business doing the distributing, then you are working for free; but that’s probably OK, since you are used to doing a number of things without compensation.

Well, if you have been reading this site, you already know what the most important thing about door hangers is: you have to make an offer that people will want to act on right away. You can’t just introduce yourself and say ‘Hi, I’m in the neighborhood.’ It has to be something more like, ‘Hi, I’m in the neighborhood and I’m down here at Sam’s restaurant and we’ve got a special for under five dollars that you need to come down and order right now.’ That’s called a call to action, and it’s a vital part of any marketing program. It is important to engage your consumer so that they will want to buy your product or service. Calling them to action is engaging them so that they will act on whatever promotion you have presented them with.

You also need to give people a chance to respond to your call to action by contacting you using the most modern means available like the internet or cell phones. If you can squeeze a QR code onto the door hanger, your customer can go right to a page on your website using their cell phone and see one or more offers. Think just for a minute about just how great this is as a marketing approach: the door hangers cost next to nothing, the QR codes cost nothing at all, and the web page on your site takes only minutes of your time. And yet it’s a way to get scores or more of people to your site and eyeing your offer. Of course you can afford to give them a good deal, simply because your marketing costs are so low.
