Lessening Karmic Retribution From Buddhist Perspective

This article is about Lessening of Karmic Retribution.

Let’s first begin by understanding what is Karma. In simple terms all our actions, spoken words and thoughts are Karma. We continuously create Karma through was we do, through what we say and most importantly through what we think. Creation of Karma can be referred to creating causes. Because of the existence of the Law of Cause and Effect all the causes that we create through our actions, spoken words and thoughts are recorded. Unless a similar Effect happens which directly proportional to the cause that we have created, our Karma is not resolved.

Since we have lived many lifetimes prior to this one, we are born with all of the unresolved Karma from the past. The Karma can be both good and bad depending upon the causes that we created. So what we experience today could be due to our Karma from the past lives.

I know of a person called BOB, who on a bright day took a long road journey to attend a festival. The day was bright and the road was good. There was no traffic on the highway as he drove along in the middle of the desert at a comfortable speed of 70 miles per hour. All of sudden, out of the blue his brand new supposedly Sturdy SUV rolled over about 5 times and before he could realise what hit him, he was thrown off the highway onto the desert sand. The accident was grave and the SUV had to be cut open to take him out.

You see this incident proves that if we have an unresolved Karma stored for an accident, we will meet up with one despite all odds. There was nothing on the road, the speed was fine and still Bob met with a terrible accident.

The question arises that if we have Karma for a particular thing how can it be lessened. Actually when we follow Buddhist principles and chant Daimoku (a form of Buddhist Mantra), we tap into the abundant source of Life Force that helps invoke our Buddha Nature. Since we show respect to the cosmic law and bow to the ultimate law of Cause and Effect, the universe understands that we are on the correct path, where we have stopped creating negative causes, it helps in diluting our Karma.

Coming back to BOB, he was a member of a Buddhist group from USA and was following the faith for many years. He used to actively participate in Buddhist activities and was reaching out to a lot of people. After accident and being pulled out of the SUV, he fell unconscious. He was taken to the hospital and when he woke up he realised that he was all fine, there was no pain, no plasters and he would just stand up from the bed without any pain. He had only suffered a mild concussion and a cut just below his eyes for which he needed to see an eye doctor. Nothing serious, just to evaluate if stitches are required or not.

This is exactly what is known as Lessening on Karmic Retribution. BOB had a karma for a terrible accident. Though he met with a severe accident where his new SUV was completely damaged and it had to cut open for him to come out, he still managed to survive with just a small cut below the eye. This is how the Karma is lessened.

Another thing to realise from this incident is that Hardships will appear in our lives due to our Karma but we get Protection from them. The law upholds and protects the people who genuinely follow it. Again coming back to BOB, he went to the eye doctor the following day of the accident. The eye doctor fixed the cut and upon examination found a serious problem with his eye, which if, undetected would have caused grave damage to his eye a few years later. His retina had an anomaly which could have been brewing for some time. The doctor fixed the problem with a small laser session and all was fine.

This further ratifies the claim that people who uphold the law and practice the law of cause and effect receive enormous amount of protection from the universe. Had BOB not met with an accident he would have surely suffered a loss of an eye in few years of time.

Now we understand what is Lessening of Karmic Retribution, I will conclude with the final words “LESSENING ONES KARMIC RETRIBUTION IS NOT A SIMPLE SETTLING OF ACCOUNTS. IT IMPLIES A FUNDAMENTAL TRANSFORMATION OF OUR LIVES WHEREBY WE PUT A STOP TO THE NEGATIVE CYCLE OF SUFFERING AND DELUSION AND ENTER A NEW POSITIVE TRAJECTORY OF HAPPINESS”.
