Spray Tanning VS Tanning Beds: Risks and Benefits

When it comes to tanning, people want to know what is better between tanning beds and spray tans. Tanning beds has been a common go-to solution to get that summer glow even in cooler seasons. But spray tanning is also catching up. And this leaves a lot of women to question which would be a better tanning treatment.

A tanning bed, also known as a sunbed, is a device that emits ultraviolet rays to give customers a glowing tan all year round. Some tanning beds have fluorescent lamps, while there are also others that generate UVA and UVB using quartz lamps, filters and reflector systems.

People can have sessions at the salon, while you can also get your own tanning bed at home. This provides convenience especially to those who frequent salons.

However, as much as it has been creating glowing reviews from tanning enthusiasts, skin experts are advising against it. This is largely due to the radiation produced which poses a serious health risk. According to Sharon Miller who is a scientist and international expert of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the tan created is the skin’s reaction to its exposure to the UV rays. The body takes this as an ‘insult’ so in defense it produces more melanin. This is both true for sunbathing and tanning beds.

UVB rays penetrate the skin resulting to sunburns, while UVA rays penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin which often leads to allergic reactions or rashes. But these are also responsible for the increases risk of developing skin cancer such as Melanoma, which is the deadliest form of the disease according to the National Cancer Institute.

Other risk that this tanning method has includes premature aging, immune suppression, eye damage, and allergic reactions. Those who are staunch advocates of tanning beds argue that it is not as dangerous as getting a tan from the sun because the amount of exposure can be modified and controlled. But these claims are not supported by any evidence.

That is why dermatologists are advising people who want to have a tan to go for spray tanning. It is faster and it is also a safe alternative. Without having to spend minutes or hours lying under the sun or inside tanning beds, you get to have an even tan in just a few minutes.

Spray tanning can be delivered using special booths or by hand device similar to an airbrush. This approach eliminates the exposure to any kind of UV rays and it is able to create similar results.

The solution used in most products is made out of dihydroxyacetone, which is a naturally occurring substance that interacts with amino acids on the skin resulting to a tanned appearance. Although it may not as long as the tan created by sunbathing and sunbeds, lasting only 5-10 days, it can be perfect for special occasions. This eliminates the skin peeling created by sunbathing after a couple of days and it can cover every groove of the body very evenly.

A lot of women are already opting for spray tans today. They prefer it because it is more skin friendly and it looks natural. For those who are worried that it might look flaky and fake, most women and bride-to-best suggest that you take the time to find a good salon to do it.
