The Most Popular American Sweets

The lure of America\’s vast culture has had quite an impact across the Atlantic, and has seen a rise in the number of UK and European distributors of American sweets, groceries, drinks, and other popular American food.

American candy is on the rise, both in the US, and over in Europe. Its popularity stems from an obvious fascination with the country, and the little variances they like to tinker with. Where else in the world could you purchase at least 4 different flavours of M&Ms?

This article is designed to showcase a few of the most loved American traditions, and to embrace a culture which has had as much impact over here as it has in its own country.

Pop Tarts

Pop Tarts are a type of candy which have seen regular distribution in past times, but have now become disappointingly rare outside the US. It consists of a chocolate frosted sandwich bar, which comes in a bundle of different flavours, and remains perhaps the most popular American sweet available.

Hershey\’s Chocolate

Another popular brand name in America, Hershey\’s chocolate is the US\’s answer to Cadburys; featuring a plethora of different flavours including plain chocolate, cookie n\’cream, and many others, this is easily one of the nation\’s favourite brands, and a top-seller across the pond.

Red Vines/Twizzlers

A classic example of American candy, Red Vines are red pieces of liquorice twists consisting of a Strawberry twang, ensuring its popularity with young and old alike. They have strong similarities to another popular American sweet, Twizzlers. Twizzlers, perhaps a candy that many in the UK and Europe would be familar with, are a product of the Hershey company, and like Red Vines, are red liquorice pieces which have gained such notoriety over the years that they have branched out into other colours and flavours including orange, lemonade, rainbow, and cherry cola.

Twinkies

Another prime example of classic American candy; the Twinkie is a small cake made up of golden sponge featuring a creamy inside, making it highly sought after in the UK and Europe and ensuring that stocks run out pretty quickly. Variances of the candy include Ding Dongs, which are small chocolate cakes with a cream filling.

Reese\’s Pieces

Well known for its bright orange packaging and large bold lettering, Reese\’s Pieces are a variety of candy bars and sweets made up of chocolate and peanut butter. Many will have sampled the small cupcake bars which are available in the UK at select stores and feature a topping of chocolate, covering a base of creamy peanut butter. It is also another example of a Hershey product, having been produced by them since 1978, and became exceedingly popular after referenced in the movie \’E.T\’.

These are some of the more popular choices and chances are that their names will not be completely new to those in the UK and Europe. They make ideal gifts for anyone who enjoys their candy, and with the Americans placing great care in their products and food, you can always be assured of a quality treat.
