The Secret to Rocking a Men’s Denim Jacket

Gentlemen, take a deep breath and make sure you’re sitting down, because we’re going to tell you something you may not want to hear; the denim jacket is back in style. Existing on the fringes of men’s fashion for years, a throwback relic to openly laugh at, the denim jacket has come back into style with a raging vengeance and that means only one thing – you need to get one.

But wait just there. One does not simply look fashionable by throwing a denim jacket over any old outfit. In fact, playing the denim jacket game is much like walking a tightrope over a pool of hungry sharks; one slip, and the fashion world will tear you apart and banish you to a life of corduroys and moonboots (cheer up, they’ll be back in fashion one day).

Here are a few pointers you might want to consider when making the leap into the oft terrifying world of buying a denim jacket.

Where To Find A Denim Jacket

Well, where do we start, future denim devotee? Let’s consider where to get your jacket from. New jackets are available from most high street and online retailers, but if you’ve got a bit of cash behind you, go for one of the big boys of denim like Levi’s or G Star.

If you fancy something a bit different, buy vintage. As vintage has become more popular over the past couple of years, there are plenty of vintage shops cropping up in areas like the Northern Quarter in Manchester, Digbeth in Birmingham and Shoreditch in London stocking tons of old school denim jackets. Try eBay as well, where there are some real bargains to be had.

Make Sure Your Jacket Matches Your Style

If you’ve made it this far into the post without clicking away in disgust or phasing out completely, we’re guessing you have an interest in fashion and as such, probably have a bit of a ‘style’. As with any piece of clothing, you should try and match your jacket to your preferred style.

For the slackers and casual dressers among us, a loose fitted jacket looks great over plaid shirts or baggy t-shirts. If you rock a more edgy look, go for something skinny or fitted and team it with dark trousers and boots for that ‘I’m a rock star and I don’t care’ look. Of course, by putting so much effort in, you do care…but no-one needs to know that.

What Should You Wear With Your Jacket?

You’ve got your jacket, it’s in your preferred style so you go out wearing it…with a pair of matching jeans. Congratulations, you’ve managed to put together the much-maligned ‘denim tuxedo’.

Double denim isn’t recommended on the whole, so opt for chinos or trousers with your jacket. Never ever wear shorts with a denim jacket, unless ‘tragically unfashionable’ is the style you’re going for. If you do go ‘double D’, then remember the denim rule of thumb; your jacket should be a lighter wash than your jeans.

So there you have it, a few little tips for rocking a denim jacket 2012-style. Follow them, and you should look pretty awesome. Just don’t blame us if you end up tripping over whilst strolling past a group of ladies in your new threads – we can’t help that.
