What Kind of Imagery Works Best on Your Flyers

Most flyers, you’ll have to admit, are pretty non-spectacular. It’s not that people don’t care about how they present their ideas; more likely, they just haven’t worked with professionals who can give them some basic tips that might help. We have always recommended getting help from professional printing folks even for something as simple as flyers, for the main reason that even a few small hints or suggestions can make a huge difference.

Flyers advertise a variety of activities, and so the nature of the activity will pretty much dictate the kinds of imagery you might want to consider for your flyer. It is best to have images that relate to the event or the event could be perceived completely different than it was intended for. The image on the flyer is just as important as any text that could be written.

For an event to be attended by the general public, we recommend a simple but very clear map, particularly if the location is not widely known. It is amazing how many times simple additions like a map will encourage people to attend, because they can start mentally planning their trip as soon a they see where the location is. It’s just the way the mind works. Making sure that the map has landmarks that people recognize is important so that it makes it easier for people to understand and find the location.

Once they start to zone in on the location, other imagery can come into play. One type of image that always draws the eye is the human face, and so we recommend a face – of a singer if it’s a concert; or if it’s something like an ethnic food festival then you might want to have a picture of a person in some sort of national costume. Between maps and faces you begin to get the reader to imagine being there: where it is and what type of person they might see there.

This is a form of projecting: once people can imagine themselves doing something, they start making decisions as to how they might carry out their desires. Notice in the example above that it was only two elements in the design that are capable by themselves of doing the trick. So the point here is that it’s not always necessary to clutter up the flyer with a multitude of images and information.

The trick is being selective. If you are sponsoring some sort of food festival, the simple image of a kitchen staff or cook holding up a plate of hot chicken or hamburgers or whatever it is will often be all that it takes. People respond to pictures of food just as readily as they respond to food itself, in the sense that the connection between the mind and the rest of the body is powerful, and a visual stimulation found in the image on a flyer works just the same as if the food were sitting in front of you.

So now you see how powerful certain types of imagery are, and how simple your flyer design can be.
