Sometimes you have just had a long day at work on a Friday night and you don’t really feel much like going out anyplace. Then you get a phone call from one friend, then two, or maybe even three, all begging you to go out someplace with them. You probably have the same Houston nightlife discussion that you always have – “Where are we going to go?” You don’t want to go to the same old haunts; you’re too tired for all that stuff. At least that’s how I feel sometimes. It’s days like these where if I am going to go out someplace, then I need some wild entertainment to keep me awake.

Just going to our usual bar or club won’t do it for me on days like this. Don’t try to drag me out for karaoke either; if I am too tired, then I am just going to be cranking about it. I want to go and do something that is really going to liven things up and make me want to stay awake.

Usually when I feel this way, the only thing that can really get me out of a funk is to go see a good rock band. I would rather not go see some old-timers who are cover band for the Grateful Dead or something like that. I want to see a true rock group who knows how to rock and get the audience into the groove with them.

As much as I like going to a rock show, that’s not really the kind of crazy entertainment that will keep me awake at 1 AM. I almost need something that is really going to get my heart pumping. If it was around Halloween time, I would say going to one of the haunted house horror shows would do it for me. There’s nothing getting scared until your buddy wets himself to really keep you awake.

Trying to find something for other times of the year can be a little rough sometimes. We might look for a club that is having really off-the-wall kind of theme party night and try that. Okay, so it doesn’t even have to be so off the wall if it involves pretty ladies in scantily clad costumes. That’s usually enough to get me crazy and wake me up.

Honestly though, the craziest thing to keep me awake usually involves one of the afterhours places you can find. It seems like some pretty weird stuff always happens to me and my buddies whenever we go to one of these places. It’s almost like you need to stay awake just to make sure nothing weird happens to you.

Of course, there are some nights when no matter how much of Houston nightlife discussion we have, my friends just can’t seem to come up with a crazy place to go. Those actually turn out to be the craziest nights since we usually end up doing something we would have never dreamed of before. I certainly stay awake for those nights!
