Grand Canyon – Top Activities

Millions of people travel to the Grand Canyon each year. The canyon was designated a National Park about one hundred years ago, and people have been flocking to it ever since. The gorge itself is massive at 277 miles long, a mile deep, and 18 miles wide. And the sights are simply beautiful to behold. There are also lots of fun things to do when visiting the Grand Canyon.

That\’s why taking a guided tour can be one of the best Grand Canyon activities. By taking a tour, you won\’t miss any of the high points, and you will get plenty of excitement too.

If you depart from Flagstaff, Sedona, Phoenix, or Scottsdale in Arizona, you will be able to choose from a helicopter, bus, or airplane tour. That\’s also true if you\’ll be going to the canyon from Las Vegas. Grand Canyon guided tours are perfect day trips when you vacation in Vegas or Arizona, just be sure to know all the available options before you choose a tour.

Grand Canyon guided tours (whether they\’re by air, bus or a combination of both) visit either the South Rim or the West Rim of the canyon. However, if you want to see both rims, you will have to take two different tours since no tours do both on the same tour. Each rim is fantastic to visit, with lots of activities and beautiful sights to see.

Your departure city will probably determine which rim you will visit. If you leave from Las Vegas, you will have your choice of rims to visit but if you leave from a city in Central Arizona, you will most likely go to the South Rim. The West Rim is closer to Vegas so it is the quickest one to get to, which makes it the most popular with vacationers leaving from the Vegas area.

The scenic vistas along the South Rim are breathtaking, plus it is where Grand Canyon Village is located. That is where you will also find the Visitor Center, Yavapai Museum of Geology, and the old Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Station.

The West Rim is known for exhilaration and excitement. It\’s where you can walk out onto the Grand Canyon Skywalk, suspended over the canyon\’s edge. Other points of interest include Hualapai Ranch and the interesting Indian Cultural Center. But at the West Rim, you can also take a copter ride and land on the bottom of the canyon which is something that\’s not permitted at the South Rim. You can even get on board a pontoon boat and float down the Colorado River.

If you want to explore the canyon and see the sights, there are several guided tours you can choose. Bus tours, airplane flights, and helicopter rides are all fun and popular choices.

The tours to the South Rim by chopper are usually air-only trips, but if you are leaving from Vegas and going to the West Rim you can choose between an air-only and a landing tour.

Taking an air tour to the South Rim is the quickest way to see a large part of the canyon since the flight will cover around seventy-five percent of the area. However, you can take an airplane tour to the West Rim from Vegas if you prefer. Some of the West Rim flights are air-only trips, but others land and let you take part in other activities while there.

Some South Rim motor coach tour packages include an add-on rim-to-rim helicopter flight (highly recommended!), but West Rim bus tours also let you add extra Grand Canyon activities like exciting adventures like the chopper flight to the bottom, the Skywalk and/or the Colorado River float tour.

Of course, the Grand Canyon has many spectacular sights to behold, but in addition to that, there are many exciting activities to enjoy that make your visit a fun one.
