Many people head to Fort DeSoto Park to enjoy the highly rated beaches, but if you walk a few minutes from the sand dunes, you’ll come across the remnants of the park’s namesake fort, complete with cannons from the Spanish-American War and old magazine rooms to explore. The park also has quick access to barbecue grills and picnic pavilions, so it’s easy to spend an entire day there having fun with the family.

If you have kids who might be more interested in sharks or digging up fossils than in old forts, you might choose to take them to Venice Beach. This beach has everything you’d expect out of a beach on Florida’s West Coast – fine sand, balmy breezes, and refreshingly blue water – but it is also known worldwide for its abundance of prehistoric shark teeth. Finding teeth there is as simple as looking down when walking the beach or combing through the sand. If you do decide to visit, be sure to bring along a container to take home the fruits of your treasure hunting labor.
