How to Read My Son’s Text Messages

After you make the decision to monitor communications, you are left to wonder just how to read my son’s text messages. Of course, the path of least resistance when it comes to reading text messages on another person’s phone is to simply access the device. However, that is easier said than done.

Sure, you may be able to steal a quick peek while your child is taking a shower after sports practice or grabbing a nap on a Saturday afternoon. But what about all the other times they are away at school or hanging out at a friend’s house? It is also possible, and probably likely, that they know better than to leave incriminating text messages on their phone.

Is there a way that you read his text messages at your convenience, and see the information he deletes? The answer is yes. The solution is spyware.

How Does Spyware Work?

Spyware is a type of software program that allows parents to read text messages sent to and from a phone. After the installation process, access to the phone is no longer needed. Depending on the type of software program purchased, the installation process will vary but typically take no longer than a few minutes.

At that point, all of the incoming and outgoing data communicated to and from the device is recorded. In addition to text messages, this includes video messages, photos, application downloads and the like. A parent can even track a child’s whereabouts by accessing the GPS records noted by the spyware program.

The person in charge of monitoring the information simply logs in to a secure website to read and view the information. Even when the information is removed from the phone, it remains available via the web portal.

Addressing Misbehavior

Nine times out of 10, kids are simply being kids and having, at worst, a bit of harmless fun. However, if disturbing text messages – sexting, bullying, etc. – are found, it becomes necessary to address the problem. Clearly, this is a double edge sword because your child will blame you for accessing his “private” information in the first place.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to this issue. From the time the child receives the phone, parents may need to indicate their intent to monitor the device. If it is too late to go that route, it may be best to revisit expectations when poor behavior is noted.

For example, have a family meeting to discuss the latest anti-bullying campaigns or how everything one does and says online becomes a part of a permanent digital database. Chances are, kids will want to the right thing when they are part of the solution instead of told exactly how to behave. They also tend to stop misbehaving once they fully understand the potential consequences of their actions.
