Fatal Publicity Mistake #1

There are a number of fatal publicity mistakes I see people making over and over again. These people wonder why they aren’t getting publicity. I’m going to do a series of articles talking about these mistakes. They are in no particular order.

The first mistake I want to focus on is directly promoting a product or service in a press release. By this I mean that people focus the entire content of their release on their product. If this is done in the right way, it can be very effective. Unfortunately, very few people do it the right way.

Here’s the right way. In your press release, focus attention on one problem your product solves. Every single product on earth solves at least one problem. Yours does too. During your interviews, tell people how to solve that same problem.

What do most people do? They blatantly promote – and try to sell – their product. They don’t sound like a source of good information and solutions to a problem. Instead, they sound just like very other salesman.

The purpose – the ONLY purpose – of a press release is to get the attention of the reporters. It’s not to sell a product. I know what other people have told you. I know what those $20 books on publicity have told you.

They all have told you to be sure to get the name of your product, the price, the phone number to order, etc. in your press release.

They’ve told you to be sure to mention your product several times during your interviews. And be sure to include all of the ordering information. If you follow that advice, you’ll find it very difficult to get any publicity.

The truth is – that’s the fastest way to get your press release tossed in the trash. Do direct plugs for your product during your interviews and that’ll be the last time that reporter interviews you. The only job of your press release is to get the attention of the reporter. The ONLY job of your press release is to get the attention of the reporter.

Your only job in seeking publicity is to be a source of great information that the reporter can pass along to his audience. Your job is NOT to be a salesman for your product. Try to directly sell your product during your interviews and you’ll find yourself on the outside looking in, wondering what happened.

You’ve heard plenty of people on radio or TV blatantly trying to sell their product. Instead of giving you great information about how to solve a problem that their product can solve, they skip right over that and try to get right into your wallet.

Instead of you becoming interested in the information he was giving you, you were turned off by the sales pitch you were being subjected to. Makes sense, doesn’t it? OK, that’s it for now. I’ve got to get back to keeping my eye on those people making fatal mistakes as they try to get publicity.

In my next article, I’ll tell you all about another fatal publicity mistake people constantly make. I’ll also tell you how to avoid it!
