With summer nearly behind us, it\’s time to start planning for that fall Grand Canyon helicopter tour.

The great thing about fall flights is the weather, especially at the West Rim, which hits temperatures ranging up to 110 degrees!

When to Fly

The lack of severe heat means that anytime of the day is good for a helicopter trip. However, I do have one caveat: Midmornings are best because that\’s when the air is the clearest.

Fall also means you have a better chance of getting the trip you want. Sell-outs are common during summer because it\’s peak travel season at the National Park.

The situation changes during fall as visitation drops and more seats become available. That doesn\’t mean put off reserving your flight until the last minute.

Planning Ahead

In fact, I still recommend booking at least a week in advance, especially if you are flying any of the Las Vegas landing tours like the one that comes with a Colorado River boat ride or a Champagne picnic.

As noted, the majority of flights take off from Las Vegas and Tusayan, but there are a few that leave from the Phoenix metro area (expensive) and Sedona (inconsistent). If you are based in the northern Arizona area, I strongly suggest driving to Tusayan.

Las Vegas visitors get to pick between air and landing tours. I often recommend air tours to folks who have limited time to sightsee. In about 3 hours (includes hotel pick up and drop off), you can see Lake Mead, Hoover Dam and the canyon before heading back to town.

Landing Tours

For my part, I prefer a good landing tour. My main reason is that they offer more in terms of value. Then there\’s the fact that you get to see more canyon from more places. There\’s one tour that lets you experience the Park from the bottom and the top and another that includes the incredible Grand Canyon Skywalk!

For those of you going to the South Rim, you get to choose from a 1/2 hour flight and a 50-minute one. The former gets you from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. It\’s very memorable, especially the part where you go through the Dragoon Corridor.

For my money, however, I prefer the longer flight. It comes with everything the shorter one does as well as everything up to the Park\’s eastern border like Desert Watchtower, the Little Colorado and the Vermillion Cliffs. Once done, you\’ll have seen upwards of 75 percent of the Park!

Cooler Weather

Fall brings cooler temperatures do dress accordingly. My suggestion is to dress in layers and where a brimmed hat, long pants and a lightweight jacket. This most definitely applies to South Rim travelers. The West Rim, however, can get a bit tricky as it can still get warm so do a quick 48-hour weather check on the Internet or on your phone. Do that and you should be in fine shape for a flight you\’ll be talking about for some time to come.
