Becoming World Class in Life, And Reaching Your Dreams

Tonight, as well as many other nights, I\’ve been thinking about what it means to be great. We could also call that \’World Class\’. That level that people like Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan, Drew Brees, etc perform on.

What does it take to get there?

I often feel like within all of us, we have this desire to be great. Or at the very least above average. We all want to make an impact in the world in some form or another. We also desire to be free. Free in the sense that financial obligations are taken care of, as well as you being able to do what you want, when you wanted to.

It does beget the question though: Is greatness born or made? The argument for it being born in people is certainly there. It\’s those people who seem to just come out of the womb firing and accomplishing all sorts of great feats. However, what\’s more interesting if you take another look at it, those same people are also tenacious, hard workers.

Have you ever thought to yourself, \”Is this guy really that talented? Or just does he work harder than anyone else?\” I think that question is where the answer lies. I mean think about it. Think about all those people you may consider great. It doesn\’t have to be a famous person or what have you. It could be someone you know personally who is very successful.

That person may have things you want, or may cause you to feel envious at times. If you look at their work ethic objectively, you may just find out that they really put in work to get to where they are today.

So now the question becomes: \”Why don\’t I have those things he/she has? I work just as hard!\”

Do you? Do you really?

When you\’re off having a great time and living it up (which you\’re entitled to do, but..), what are they doing? I\’m not saying it in the instance of making anyone seem superior, just that overall those people are focused on the task at hand completely until it\’s done. Now I\’m sure they don\’t give up important obligations like family, etc. but that they just invest an incredible amount of time into their craft.

There\’s actually a book by Steve Siebold called 177 Mental Toughness Secrets of The World Class. It features 177 chapters that gives a rather detailed insight to how those who perform at the highest level in existence.

One thing he touched on from the very beginning that I found to be quite powerful is how the world class operates from objective reality. While the middle class (the largest sect of the population) operates from delusion. Here\’s a brief excerpt from the first chapter:

\”It\’s the middle class that is the most incongruent with reality. They are operating at a high enough level to understand that higher levels exist. Although they don\’t expect to get there, the thought crosses their mind from time to time. Because of their low expectations, their actions are incongruent with their desires. In other words, they want to live the life of the world class, but are unwilling to pay the price. Since this reality is too harsh to bear, they delude themselves into thinking they are doing everything in their power to get ahead. Of course, they\’re not. They\’ll tell you they\’re putting in far more time than they are. They\’ll swear up and down that they\’re thinking about their vision all the time, but they\’re not. The world class is brutally honest with themselves, and they tend to look reality in the face. They err on the side of over-practicing and over-preparing. Champions know that to ascend to the top, you must first be operating from a mindset of objective reality. Self-deception and delusion have no place in the professional performer\’s consciousness.\”

Powerful stuff. When I read things like this, I often ask myself if I really am giving 100% towards my goals and dreams? When you put things in perspective like that, you always seem to find that next boost to keep you going forward.

Because in the end, I believe greatness is possible in each of us. The questions is: Will we rise up and release it from ourselves?
