Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness Planning

Most people want to be prepared in case of a natural disaster or man caused disaster. Many of these same people don\’t do any emergency preparedness planning because of not knowing where to begin or think that it would be too much money or because just old fashioned procrastination.

The best time to start preparing for an emergency was yesterday. The second best time to prepare for a disaster and start learning some basic survival skills is today.

Preppers and Survival

Over the past 50 years or so emergency preparedness planning has gotten a bad reputation among much of the mainstream media.Until recently most of the world would have been considered preppers.

Many people who lived in rural areas had root cellars so they could have fruits and vegetables year round. They knew what plants were eatable and raised their own animals for food.Even those that lived in large cities had a pantry filled with food and knew how to can their own goods.

Today many of those skills are lost in favor of convenience but what would you do if the power was off for weeks or longer. What if the trucks that deliver the food to your local grocery store couldn\’t make it to your area.

How would you eat? What would you do for heat? How about water if there\’s an interruption? What about social unrest?

Natural Disasters and Hyperinflation

Weather from flooding, earthquake, hurricane, tsunami or other natural disaster, it\’s far better to have a plan as to what you and your family are going to do.It\’s not a good idea to wait and try to figure what to do in a panic with other panicked people.

The natural instinct of people is the fight or flight response and which is best really depends on the situation and should be thought out well in advance of any need. This Is why an emergency preparedness is essential.

Hyperinflation is just as devastating as any natural disaster.It\’s basically like regular inflation but happens much quicker.Prices can double every month over and over again.There\’s still food on the shelves but your money is worth less and less until it\’s worthless.

Survival Skills

Certain survival skills become much more valuable in a crisis and in emergency preparedness planning. One of the most important is the will to survive.Others include finding drinkable water and being able to grow your own food.

It\’s probably not a great idea to let your neighbors know that you started to prepare yourself in case of an emergency. If you took up gardening though it would probably go unnoticed.

If you got some solar panels or learn to fish or went camping on the occasional weekend these would be useful skills if things turned bad. Survival skills are not things you would want to try to learn in a crisis.

Learning some new skills and getting some emergency preparedness planning doesn\’t have to happen over night and is a process. It can be done from an apartment in the city or from a rural farmhouse.

You can do emergency preparedness planning if you are by yourself or as a family adventure Once you have the skills to survive nobody can take that away.If you have food and supplies and get forced to leave you can still live off the land.
