Tennis Tickets – 2010 Wimbledon Preview: Women’s Singles

The Wimbledon Championships is one of the most anticipated and prestigious tennis tournaments on the entire WTA circuit, and this year’s Grand Slam promises nothing short of spectacular storylines coming out of the women’s singles bracket. Wimbledon commences June 21, 2010 and runs through July 4, providing entertainment for all those with tennis tickets to the oldest tennis tournament in the world.

The Williams sisters are back in action this year looking to rule the grass courts at Wimbledon once again and keep the women’s singles title in the family, but Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin are both out of retirement and will make a compelling case for finalists in the upcoming tournament, as well.

Seeds for Wimbledon’s women’s singles (unlike the men’s singles) follow world rankings, and Serena and Venus Williams tower atop the list at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Clijsters is seeded at No. 8 and Henin is locked in at No. 17 going into Wimbledon, and they’ve also got some stiff competition with Caroline Wozniacki (No. 3), Jelena Jankovic (No. 4) and Francesca Schiavone (No. 5). Rankings shifted with the recent withdrawal of Elena Dementieva, the previous No. 5, as the Russian is out with an injury.

There’s no telling how Clijsters and Henin coming out of retirement will affect the Wimbledon tourney, especially as the two Belgian powerhouses have been performing extremely well lately. Henin, a finalist in the 2006 tournament, recently took home the title to the Premier Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany, and her fierce rival Kim Clijsters is no one to dismiss, either, as she recently made her comeback known with a convincing win over Venus Williams in the finals at the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open.

When it comes to Wimbledon, however, if history is any indication this year’s Grand Slam at Wimbledon will be another victory for a Williams sister. Venus and Serena Williams have a combined eight Wimbledon wins over the last 10 years, with Venus snagging five victories and Serena taking three. The younger Williams is the reigning Wimbledon champion, beating sister Venus in last year’s finals 7-6(3), 6-2. If both Williams sisters make it to the finals again at this year’s Wimbledon tournament, it will mark the fifth time for a sister-sister matchup between the two in the Wimbledon finals.

Aside from the usual suspects, other female netters to watch for in this year’s women’s singles tournament are Dinara Safina, Ivo Karlovic and Francesca Schiavone. Safina, currently the world No. 20, reached the semifinals last year before she was ousted by Brand Levitra Venus Williams 6-1, 6-0, and even though she had a very weak showing at the recent French Open, the Russian netter could still be a wild card for Wimbledon.

Schiavone goes into this summer’s Wimbledon tourney as the reigning French Open winner, competing to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2002 to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon back to back. It’s no secret that Schiavone struggles on the grass court, however, so her recent win on clay could be overshadowed by the playing surface. Maria Sharapova is another player who could make some bold moves at the upcoming championships at Wimbledon. Sharapova is an excellent grass-court player and her No. 16 seed is nothing to scoff at. The action at Wimbledon kicks off June 21, and tickets to Wimbledon and several other WTA tournaments are available now online.
