Working New Muscles on the Treadmill

When you think of using a treadmill to get your cardio workout in, you probably think o stepping onto a machine and running. Although this is a great way to get a good run in, you can use your treadmill in so many more ways.

Getting a totally body workout is totally possible when you are on one of these machines. There are a lot of different ways to utilize the settings on the machine so that you can mix up your workout and work new muscles.

There are not a lot of people that understand the different ways to utilize these machines. First, you should start by getting some free weights that you are able to hold in your hands and even run with.

There are some gloves that have weights built into the outside of the palm. If these are comfortable for you to have on your hands they can be a great way to be holding weights but still have full use of your hands.

When you are holding the weights you have to make sure that you pump your arms. This means that you may have to start with a very light weight, and if you cannot find a weight that is light enough you may want to start by holding water bottles.

The extra weight in your arms will definitely slow down your run when you are first getting started. Your arms are going to get more tired much quicker than you are used to and it will be hard to keep them up and pumping.

It is important that you do not use weights that are too heavy, if you do use weights that are too heavy you can easily injure yourself. There are a lot of people that will overestimate how strong they are because it sounds like the weights are too small.

After you have found a weight size that works, make goals to run a certain distance without having a lull in your arm pumping. After you have accomplished that goal try moving up another pound in your weights.

Continue this process until you reach your ultimate goal. This new way to run will help you workout your back, your arms, your wrists and even give your legs more weight to carry throughout the duration of your run.

Another great way to give your legs more to carry is to find ankle weights. You can find these weights at any major fitness store and even in most gyms.

If you are not interested in carrying more weight on your body you can adjust the settings on the treadmill to get a whole new workout. First, you can start by increasing the incline.

When you are trying to run up a hill you will be using different muscles in your legs than if you are running on a flat surface. After you begin to run uphill you may have to slow your pace down dramatically.

Working to be able to run uphill just as well as you can run on a flat surface will take some time and a lot of effort. Do not give up; instead make sure that you set some small goals and some larger goals to ensure that you are improving.

The more that you improve the more you will be strengthening your heart. There are a lot of people that feel that running uphill gives their cardiovascular system a much better exercise than running on a flat surface.

You can also concentrate on twisting as you run. This may sound odd, but as you twist from side to side you will be strengthening the abdominal muscles all throughout your core.

Not only will you be working the abdominal muscles in the front of your stomach but you will also be working your oblique muscles. As you turn side to side you will be taking your treadmill workout to a whole new level.

No matter how you choose to use your treadmill, make sure that you understand all of the muscles you can be strengthening. Taking the time to find a new routine will be well worth your time when you see the results manifest in the mirror.
