Understanding the Techniques of Dance

As much as dance is about expression of the soul through the movements of the body, you will also need to learn the techniques of dance for many reasons. For one thing, these techniques will help in significantly lessening the injuries that many dancers can suffer in the course of their career. For another thing, these techniques are designed to ensure that body movements are just as the choreographer intended them to be, whether it is a pirouette or in a split jump.

The most important is centering, which allows the body to move freely and gracefully. Virtually all dance movements require the dance to be perfectly centered so that the flow of movement becomes more natural, more precise and more elegant. Most dance forms regard the solar plexus as the centering point of the body, thus, the emphasis on proper posture in relation to it.

You must also learn how to move in space. Dance masters will instruct students to think of the space as a tangible element that one must move through, move with and move in instead of regarding it as an empty space. You have to be conscious of the space being utilized in the dance performance.

Of course, breathing is an important part of technique for the simple reason that proper breathing is necessary for stamina, endurance and control. It will also help in providing for proper form while dancing, especially in ballet. You will be taught by your teacher the proper ways, when and where to breath to achieve all of the above mentioned purposes.

Gravity is the foremost natural force that every dancer must be aware of when dancing, be it while crawling on the ground or flying through the air. You have to work with gravity instead of against it as your movements can be controlled but gravity is a force all its own.

Contrary to popular opinion, balance is not just about standing on one leg and being able to keep it up for hours at a time. More importantly, balance in dancing means bringing all of the body parts together and then melding them to form one harmonious whole. You have to constantly strive for balance even when the dance Silagra movements call for falling down.

Posture links the important components of balance and movement in dance. In fact, dancers will spend all their lives being conscious about proper posture, which they will take with them even in old age. You have to look at a mirror and ask the opinion of others since there is often a wide difference between what looks right to what feels right in posture.

Gesture is also necessary to express the dance movements in more detailed terms. Body language is often used to communicate the feelings of a character in a dance performance, said language of which will depend on the dance form. For example, hands on hips are an expression of aggression in modern dance but not so in ballet.

And of course, you’ll want to possess rhythm. All dancers should be able to listen to the rhythm in his body as well as to the music coming from the environment. In so doing, the dance becomes a melding of the inside with the outside – truly, a pleasure to see.

Indeed, techniques are the first things that a student will be instructed on in dance class. When the basics have been perfected, the other aspects of dance can then be developed.
