Auto Maintenance Chassis Lubrication Lubricating Suspension & Steering

Lubrication is a most simple process and procedure that can add miles and miles as well as many happy trouble free years to your auto’s lifetime.

Even though most auto makers allow long intervals of up to 35,000 miles (approx 60,000 km) between routine lubrication of the suspension and steering systems it is generally held among automotive trade specialists and most neighborhood mechanics that overall it is a good idea to renew the grease in these components at least once a year or every 6,000 miles (10,000 km) if driving conditions are severe. What constitutes “severe Cialis Jelly driving conditions” in the minds and terminologies of fleet maintenance speclialists and staff? Constant stop and go, continual idling conditions especially in cold weather conditions, as you might find in northern Alberta Canada or in the northern United States. Two examples of severe automotive engine and maintenance conditions might be taxicabs and police car use.

If you are doing it yourself (DIY), choose a chassis grease that contains molybdenum disulphide (Moly) made by one of the reputable oil companies. It seems that in the retail and auto trades that most brands are made in cartridge format for use in standard run of the mill low pressure hand operated grease guns. You can get those from your local big box auto store or your local specialty automotive retailer. Most cars are equipped with nipple type grease fittings, but some have plug type fittings as well.

When you purchase a grease gun, make sure to get nozzles that suit the fittings on your car. A flexible hose attachment and some right angle nipples are also useful, since standard grease fittings can be counted to be located in places that may be more than difficult to reach with a hand powered gun.

Lubricating your car yourself is easy if you take the time to prepare for the job well before you begin. Preparation and thoroughness is everything. Have all the tools and materials that you will need within easy reach while you are under the car

Make sure that you have raised the car safely before you have begun. Set the parking break and put the transmission in gear (automatic transmissions in park).

Unless they are replacement parts, most u-joints (universal joints) are packed with lubricant and sealed for life. You can identify a u-joint that needs lubrication by noting whether or not there is a grease fitting or plug on it. If there is lubricate the u-joint each and every time you lubricate the suspension system. Some drive shafts have more than one U-joint. So be sure not to miss any lubrication points.

To check a U-joint for wear, grip the drive shaft with one hand and the U-joint with the other. If there is any rattling or side to side movement, the U-joint is worn and should be serviced.

Lubricate the U-joint and the grease fitting on “the cross”. If the cross has a plug then removes it and screw in the fitting to lubricate it. Next remove the fitting and reinstall the plug. It can be said to lubricate double U-joints in the exact same manner and means as single U-joints.

In the end it can be said that when it comes to chassis lubrication and lubricating the suspension and steering of your vehicle that a pound of prevention is worth many tons of cure.
