Wind Generator Popular Science and a Wealth of Misinformation

Today the do it yourself wind generator project has gained massive popularity. With the emergence of the blog and forums many wind turbine builders are seeking technical information and advice in these arenas. The truth is these are often moderated by those with the agenda of promoting their own products. As a result and misleading and outright false information is being discriminated and circulated through the internet. I have found that many forums are providing do it your selfers with terrible advice. This is not always the malicious intent of the forum owner but sometimes just the fact technical information is being given by very non technical people. This is often given under the premise that these individuals are knowledgeable in some way about wind power when many are novices themselves

It is interesting to me sometimes that seven out of every ten customers I take calls from identify themselves as an electrician or and engineer of some type. Many with a sure fire patented Kamagra Gold invention destined to achieve “over unity” i.e. a machine that produces more power going out than in consumes coming in. Just an observation……none of them have succeeded because it bends to the law of physics to say the least. My opinion is that consumers have developed such a fear and distrust of wind energy companies that they feel they must portrait some sort of knowledge so the store owner will feel that they can’t get away with cheating them. Usually within a few minutes of speaking with the consumer or “mad scientist” it become fairly obvious they are not familiar with the basics such as the difference between parallel and serial wiring.

Further speaking with people a lot of customers have been flat out burned by other sales outlets such as e bay or purchasing items and developing projects based on information that they have relied on taken from forums. If you notice a wind power store that has its own forum you should be guarded in the credibility you give the information provided. I have read excerpts from these boards that is comical. Of course if you ask the windy folks what kind of blades they would recommend for your particular application their blades would be just perfect. All this out without asking about the site what type of wind speed or gathering and analyzing pertinent information needed to give such a recommendation.

My point is as a consumer your need to pay close attention to where your take your advice. The ametek 38 was hailed as a great wind generator motor for a long time by many internet sources. The fact is these motors were used in 12 volt systems therefore only charging batteries when the rotations of the blades exceed the 600 rpm needed to charge the system. Many sellers advertised these as 400 watt wind turbines. In reality by the time the small blades were added that were needed to get the generator up to rotation speeds needed to generate 12 volts the wind generator often lacked the power to exceed the torque requirement when placed under a load. Many of these machines produce little if any power defiantly under 50 watts more like 10-12

Blades must be matched with the generators and the wind zone that the product will be used in must be taken into account to make proper recommendations. Simply labeling a product with wattage is deceiving at best. A generator may have the capability of producing 1000 watts but at what rpm? The “cut in speed” determined by the voltage of the system is of great importance. If a turbine has a 12 volt cut in and a rotor to small to rotate past the load you will never produce much power. On the other hand if you have a 48 volt system and the generator you have chosen for your project isn’t capable of reaching 48 volts you will never reach produce any power. In summary wind generators can be great investments. Generator cut in speed, rotor, wind zone and lay of the land must be accounted for to achieve positive results. Taking advice from novices on a wind blog often is not the best source for information. This is further complicated when the moderator has an agenda of selling ones own products.
