Hypothyroidism Causes and Symptoms

Many people have heard the term under active thyroid more than they would have heard of hypothyroidism. These disorders are one and the same. The term for an over active thyroid gland is hyperthyroidism. These are both very different from each other but come from the same place and that is the thyroid gland. The levels of hormones that your thyroid produces, can be tested by a doctor to find out if yours is making too much, too little or a levelled amount. Most people do not get these levels checked unless they are suffering from one or more of the symptoms associated with these disorders.

If you find that you are more tired than normal, feeling exhausted and drained all the time even if you’ve gotten plenty of sleep then it is an indication that you may be suffering from hypothyroidism. You’re thyroid gland may not be producing enough of the hormones that give your body the get up and go that you need to function in everyday life. This can also make your muscles feel very weak and definitely make everyday tasks a struggle. This may go on for a while before a person goes into the doctor. Some try other ways to give themselves a boost during the day and put the lack of energy down to other things within their life.

Some sufferers have very dry skin, hair and nails. Your body will find it harder to hold moisture and skin may become not only dry but quite flaky and peel. Nails are likely to become brittle and break. This may be more obvious if you tend to have strong nails usually. The same thing with your hair if it is generally pretty healthy and strong. If you notice it has become brittle, dry and snapping without a very good reason then it can often be an indication of this disorder. Hypothyroidism has so many more symptoms that definitely vary between people.

Depending on your age, sex and lifestyle it is common to have varied symptoms to others. Some suffer from memory loss and feel frazzled or out of sorts often. Finding it hard to concentrate and focus may certainly become frustrating if it goes on for a prolonged time frame. Other obvious symptoms may include a lump at the centre of the throat or enlarged gland, weight gain that seems unreasonable and even a rash and dry eyes or mouth. So if your thyroid gland is not functioning correctly clearly the side effects are not something anyone would want to live with on a daily basis.

It is always best to go to your doctor if you are unsure about something and hypothyroidism is definitely one of them. Especially considering so many cases of under active thyroid are not diagnosed and this can cause bigger problems later on. If your doctor thinks you may have hypothyroidism he’ll request a blood test that will show the levels of thyroid hormones being released and let you know whats going on with your body.
