PowerShot SD1200 is Review: What Do You Really Get?

My PowerShot SD1200 IS review will reveal what you really need to know about how well the advertised features work.

Now a days, it seems everything just keeps getting smaller and smaller. And digital cameras haven’t escaped the miniaturization. But can you really get quality photos from a really small (sub-compact) digital camera?

Now to get professional grade pictures, your best bet is still a Digital-SLR, which allows you to have total control over all settings and different lenses to get that perfect shot. But there is a learning curve involved in operating a D-SLR camera to get optimal photos, that quite honestly, many people just don’t want to learn. Most users just want to point and shoot and let the camera worry about changing the internal settings to get the picture right.

Enter the PowerShot SD1200 IS – the most advanced sub-compact camera giving ultimate freedom to the user while it delivers great photos. The size of this camera is one of its greatest assets. Being about the size of a deck of cards, you can take this camera just about anywhere and get some impressive shots.

Then there are over a dozen pre-programmed shooting modes, one of which can surely satisfy your photo opportunity. Probably the most used mode is ‘Smart Auto’, which tries to figure out the best internal settings for your picture – you literally point-and-shoot. But other special pre-programmed shooting modes include ‘Beach’, ‘Snow’, ‘Kids and Pets’, and ‘Digital Macro’, all of which put the internal settings just how you need them to shoot these special kind of pictures.

Another feature worth mentioning that was discovered during my PowerShot SD1200 IS review is the built-in optical image stabilizer. This reduces the blurry pictures you get caused by a shaky hand. The advanced technology automatically detects and corrects camera shake.

And let’s not forget its price, one of its best features! At around $150, the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS is a very competitively priced sub-compact camera.

This camera also has a nice size LCD screen for viewing or composing shots, and still has a separate viewfinder – which is my preference, especially when out in bright sunlight when looking at those LCD screens can be very difficult. Using a viewfinder over the LCD screen for picture composition also saves battery life – great feature for when you are running low on your battery.

And speaking of batteries, this camera uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which gives you a long battery life to boot.

On the not-so-good side of my PowerShot SD1200 IS review, this camera does not come with a printed manual. This presents a problem if you are not near a computer when you are trying to figure something out with your camera. Manuals are just nice to carry around with you for reference.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the SD1200 IS is with shots taken in very low-light situations. One of the ways to compensate for low light conditions is to raise the ISO (film/sensor sensitivity). And when it is raised to 400 or above, the noise, or graininess, really starts to rear its ugly head. Keeping the ISO below 400, the photos are really sharp with great colors. However, ISO 400 and above, not so great. The nice part is that the majority of pictures taken are usually below ISO 400!

In conclusion of my Canon Powershot SD1200 IS Review, I found it to be a very simple, straightforward and easy to use little camera. This camera takes great pictures in most situations, with the Smart Auto setting automatically adjusting to different light settings, taking all the guesswork out for you.

Overall, for the price, features, and size, this camera is a steal.
