Kinds of Window Treatment and Coverings For Windows

Window coverings would consist of curtains and drapes. In shopping for some, you need to make three choices that will be appropriate for your home.

1. Formal vs. informal window treatment
2. Unlined vs. lined window coverings
3. Heading for the covering of the windows

Formal Window Treatment

This is typically composed of two to three layers which include:

– Casement curtain for the trim area. You would have options such as solid, sheer or lace panels.
– Draperies. This will cover the trim of the window and even the upper and side portions.
– Valance or pelnet. This is optional. This covers the curtain and the heading
– Hard valance, lanbre-quin or cornice. Wood is the usual material used for this and this will then be topped with fabric or upholstery.

To emphasise the formal appeal of the room, heavy fabrics should be used such as tapestries, velvet, damasks, brocades, and silks. However, these are high maintenance fabrics with regards to the effort that you need to exert when washing them.

Informal Window Treatment

This is usually made up one to two layers or even just the covering by itself. This is ideal for windows which are already appealing as they are and for those which are already naturally provided for with privacy. You may not also think of dressing your window up if you love the view of the outdoors. To emphasise the casual look of the room, basic windows would suffice. To maintain some privacy, you can do this by putting some curtains only on the bottom part of the window. The coverings for an informal appeal would be linen, chitz, gingham, ticking, and muslin. These coverings are light and easy to wash.

Unlined Treatment

This can be decided once you will also decide on a formal or informal treatment. The lighting and the life span of the window arrangement need to be considered. It allows light to enter the room lightly and though it is a simple treatment, it still is effective. The ideal curtain to use would be one that is attractive inside and out so that there would not be any diminishing points at all. Usually, unlined treatment can be given by mobile, lace, and sheers with silk or cotton material. This treatment will allow light in but will keep the figures out even with the lights on form the inside.

Lining Treatment

Coverings with linings are heavier but have more body. Such are effective in blocking out much of the light from the outside. The lined fabric will also have longer life span with regards to its colours. They are also effective at keeping the noise off from the outside. If the lining is already damaged, your covering will still be very usable. The advisable thing to do when it comes to lining would be to apply lining treatment not only to one window but also to the rest of them in the house. To be safe, you should just use white or off white lining so as not to possibly damage the general colour of your curtains with coloured linings.
