One of the most important people that you will see in a passenger plane during your travel would be an airline flight attendant. The duties of a flight attendant usually vary depending on the airline and the type of aircraft. Most of their duties, responsibilities and procedures are set by the Federal Aviation Administration or FAA. Before each flight, the captain of the plane briefs all the fight attendants and crew with regards to the flying time and weather conditions. The captain also instructs them of the procedures relating to emergency evacuation.

Basically, there are three primary objectives or duties of a flight attendant. The first one is to make sure that all the passengers are safe during their travel. They ensure that all the safety equipments needed are complete and that all the cabins contain enough supplies. They also make sure that all of the passengers’ luggage are safely secured so as to avoid injuries. Usually, they place the luggage inside overhead compartments or underneath the seat in front of them. Before the plane takes off, the flight attendants also brief the passengers of the safety procedures most especially during emergencies. They also check whether or not the seat belts of the passengers are securely attached and locked. Most importantly, the flight attendant is there in order to assist the passengers in times of emergency and provide first aid.

Another major role of a flight attendant is to make sure that all the passengers have a comfortable travel. They will greet the passengers as they board the plane and check their tickets. They also usher the passengers to their seats and help them carry their small luggage and coats. After the plane has taken off, the flight attendant will offer drinks, snacks and even meals to the passengers. They will also give the passenger magazines or books for them to read. More importantly, the flight attendant answers the questions of the passengers.

All of the tasks stated above are handled by the flight attendant every time he or she is on duty. Every passenger plane has about one to ten airline flight attendants, depending on the size of the planes. Then number of flight attendants also depends on the ratio and proportion of the first class to economy passengers. The Boeing 747, a very large aircraft, has up to 16 flight attendants. Today, many airline companies increase the number of flight attendants in order to increase their quality of service.

A flight attendant should at least be a high school graduate, however, those who earned a college degree is preferred. The attendant should also be at least nineteen years of age and must be in good health condition. He or she should be tall enough to reach the cabins and his or her weight should be proportional to the height. A standard uniform should be worn by every flight attendant. Wearing unusual hairstyles is also prohibited because the hair should be as orderly as possible. Lastly, the attendant should be neatly shaven and must not have visible piercings, tattoos and other body marks.
