Colors That Create a Serene, Modern Bedroom

A bedroom is a personal sanctuary and it needs to be inviting, serene and conducive to rest and renewal. If you love modern style, then streamlined furniture and clean simple lines throughout the room will support that style. While stark bold colors are a hallmark of modern style, certain colors promote a restful ambiance better than others; for example, a color palette of contrasting black and white can be too severe and cold for a bedroom. Here is a guide on modern color to help you create the restful contemporary retreat you crave.

Rest Inducing Color Choices

– Shades of blue are as restful and peaceful as an ocean horizon stretching out to meet the sky. Blue promotes relaxation and calms restlessness. It is an excellent choice for wall color, bedding or accents. Blue also offers a cool, clean feeling that many people find restful. Spa-inspired shades of blue, like aqua and beach glass, are beautiful when combined with white and sand and can be used to create an inviting room that welcomes you at the end of each day.

– Close to blue are shades of green, which are legendary for their ability to promote rest and calm. Green is often used in hospitals and rehabilitation clinics to keep patients calm and well rested. Medium shades of green, such as sage green or bamboo grass, are very attractive when mixed with natural woods, stone and neutral colors like taupe.
– Certain shades of purple, which are variations of blue, can also be very restful. Choose purples with strong blue undertones, as those with red undertones can be too stimulating. Purple combines easily with blue or green as well as gray and other neutrals.

– A neutral color bedroom is also restful. Combine various shades of white or beige and add lots of texture for interest and tactile satisfaction. For example, mix fabrics such as sateen, chenille and linen in bedding and bedding accessories. A neutral backdrop can also provide a calming counterpoint for accents in soothing shades of blue, green or purple.
Colors to Avoid

If your goal is to create a restful bedroom, bold hot colors tend to create the opposite effect; they are energizing and exciting and have a tendency to stimulate thoughts and emotions. Bright shades of pink, red, orange and yellow can be too invigorating if used in a bedroom, especially if they are a predominant color in the overall palette.

But if you love these colors, they can still be used in a bedroom, just use them in small doses, such as in throw pillows or wall art. You can also opt to use toned down versions of these colors. For example, a pale shade of seashell pink can be stunning when mixed with off white and pale aqua blue, as long as white is the major player in the mix. Or add a modern shade of bold mimosa yellow in throw pillows on a dove gray bedspread in a room painted pearl gray with white trim; the overall effect is clean, crisp and contemporary, but not overly stimulating.
