Fun Ideas For Decorating Your Breezeway With a Wild Bird Theme

The breezeway is usually an area that connects your garage to the main house, and in some instances, affords access to the yard area of the property as well. But the breezeway, as utilitarian as it may be, can also be used to blur the line between the interior and exterior of the home, creating a seamless division between the two. A wild bird theme can be used to do just that.

Bear in mind that wild birds are different in every region of the country. If you live in the south, tropical birds with an island backdrop is appropriate, while those living in the north would want to use birds that are actually native to their locale. Of course that doesn’t mean that someone living in the U.S. heartland wouldn’t still enjoy a tropical theme as well.

Walls

Project your favorite forest pictures directly onto the walls. If you are an artist at heart and like photographic accuracy, go ahead and paint what you see projected. If you want a more abstract feel, blur the picture slightly. That way you will paint in the colors, but the finished wall will not look photographic.
Use a craft projector (very inexpensive and available at your local crafts or art store) to project images of the woodland upon the walls of your breezeway. Use acrylic paint to paint these images, or just outline them to add a bit of character to the space. If you are going for the tropical look, choose tropical scenes for the wall, like palm trees and coastlines.

Furnishings and Furniture

Add rustic furniture to your breezeway that will reinforce your theme. Weathered armoires for holding shoes and coats make a nice accent, as do slab benches or twig furniture. For tropical themes, add rustic furniture that gives you a feel of the shore or sailing, items with a nautical feel, in materials that are reminiscent of ship’s planking; an old captain’s wheel can also be converted into a place to hang umbrellas or outerwear.

Bring on the Birds

A walk through the woods during the fall of the year will often reveal abandoned nests. If it’s permissible in your area (check local laws), use a hand saw in order to cut down the branch where you find the nest, and then mount it in a high corner of the breezeway. Research the Web to find out what type of birds use that type of nest, and then make a trip to the local craft store to find birds of that type and place them in the nest for an authentic accent you’ll adore. Buy more birds to hang about the space, placing some atop your furniture and others perching near the window sills. You can also use clear fishing line to suspend birds in midflight. You might also select to add framed prints of birds to the area, or make your own frames from seashells for a tropical theme.
