Simple Ways to Bring Organization to the Utility Room

Does your utility room feel more like a closet with a washer/dryer combo squeezed inside? Or do you have a utility room where you can do laundry that also offers space for storage of your gardening tools and other items? No matter whether you have a small utility room that barely qualifies as a room or a larger space, you can bring organization to this much-underappreciated area of the home easily.

Shelving

The biggest helpers for any utility room are shelves, but typical shelving units for the utility room are very ugly and well, utilitarian! Unsightly metal shelves don’t really do anything to make the utility room look good, but they may be the best option for using your space. You can dress them up using spray paint colors. Prepare the shelves by sanding away rust and then spraying with a primer coat. Then choose your favorite color and refresh the look of the shelves in minutes. If your utility room does not have any shelving, then adding shelves to the room is a good idea. You don’t need to go with traditional metal shelving, but may opt instead for shelves that are attached with double slot brackets and that are available in track lengths up to 78″. Wire shelving systems are another good alternative for a utility room.

Storage Boxes

If your utility room is ripe with clutter, then storage boxes may be your best friend in this small area of the home. If you don’t want to invest in readymade storage boxes, choose to make your own instead. Produce boxes that are discarded at the local grocery can be outfitted with wallpaper of your choice to make ideal storage containers that will help whip the utility room into shape quickly. Wallpaper can be attached with tacky glue rather than wallpaper paste, as paste will not adhere to cardboard. When your boxes are filled with items that you want to store, affix labels to the front or side of each box, depending on how they are stacked, to indicate the contents. Attractive storage boxes can turn a ho-hum utility room into a more appealing place in a heartbeat.

Clothing Racks

Clothing racks are also fabulous for helping you organize the utility room, whether you use them to hang the laundry as it comes out of the dryer, or for storing away out of season clothing items. You can hang a simple rack near the ceiling, and then come down a few feet and hang another. This gives you two racks in the space of one, and you might use the top rack for tops, blouses, and shirt, and the bottom for slacks, jeans and pants.

These are just a few of the many ways that you can bring organization to the utility room and reclaim this valuable space for your family’s needs.

Don’t forget to embellish the room with personal aesthetic accents. For better interior look add suitable modern accessories and hang contemporary metal wall art.
