Using Stock Items for the Perfect Closet

There is a reason that you can find many items for the home in so-called stock sizes, although the main reason for stock sizes is to make producing items easier for the manufacturer. Absent industry standard-sizes, everything that we buy would likely cost a lot more. And besides, it is often comforting to learn that the new faucet you just purchased for the bathroom will fit perfectly because of the standardized holes in the back. Stock items can be used throughout the home in a number of different places, including your closet.

The closet organizer is one of the handiest stock items on the market. Nearly each system available makes the assumption that your closet is four, six, eight, ten, or twelve-feet wide. But if your closet dimensions are not exactly ‘stock’, then you choose the next size up or you cut the shelves down to fit.

For closets that just barely accommodate a stock wire rack that is four feet in width, you may find yourself wishing that the bottom section was not as wide as the rest to make space for dresses or items that are longer. This can be accomplished without a custom closet organization system.

Start with the installation of the track that houses the shelf brackets. Mount one track in a vertical position three feet from the left wall of your closet and with the other track around eight-inches from the left wall. Next, install the supporting brackets so that the four-foot shelf will sit twelve-inches from the closet’s ceiling. Then you will need to cut the second four-foot shelf so that it is two wires wider than the bracket, which is just a bit over three feet in width. Install this particular shelf so that it is high enough for your pants to clear the floor. You can use this shelf for hanging your shirts, jackets, and pants.

Next, look for shelving to hold folding items like sweaters. You may find that twelve-inch wire shelves are in the same four, six, eight, ten and twelve-feet wide sizes. You can purchase a larger shelf and cut it down to size to accommodate the sweaters and other items that might need to be folded in lieu of hanging. If you can find no better alternative, you might also think of adding decorative wicker baskets with fabric lining to hold items in the closet. (Be sure that they are lined with fabric that will protect your sweaters and delicates from becoming snagged or damaged). Position these items along the floor.

With just a few modifications of stock items that are available widely, you can create a custom look in your closet that makes the best use of your space.

To finish the new look, add modern accessories and hang contemporary metal wall art. No need to spend a lot of money about them. You can find suitable decoration on a budget at the flea-market or on garage sale.
