Winter tires are carefully designed for cold weather and treacherous road conditions. They are a less invasive alternative to snow chains, which can cause damage to both the wheel and the road, and are able to perform nicely in the snow and ice. Generally, these items are made from softer rubbers than regular tires which allows them to have better traction at below zero temperatures. To ensure that your vehicle is protected, make sure you install its snow tires before winter sets in.

After obtaining new snow tires for your car, take some time to gather up all of the items and tools that you’ll need to install them. You will require a sturdy jack to hoist up the vehicle and a lug nut wrench to loosen and remove the wheel’s bolts. To help you keep track of the small parts, you may want to consider using a small bowl or tray as well.

Since you will be using a personal use jack, you will only be able to lift up one wheel at a time. To prevent any foreseeable accidents and injuries, make sure you immobilize the other tires as you work. This can be easily accomplished by sliding small blocks or stops snugly behind each tire.

When you are ready to begin, use the lug nut wrench to equally loosen all of the wheel’s bolts. Make sure that you do this when the vehicle is still on the ground and that the lug nuts are only loosened. The bolts should still be tight enough that they can’t be moved by manual force.

Next, get out your jack and place it in the appropriate spot under the car. To determine the best spot, use your hand to feel around the underside near the tire. Most vehicle’s have a solid metal plate near each wheel that is meant for the jack. If you situate the jack in the wrong area, you could crack the body and hinder your progress. When the appropriate spot has been located, use your jack to raise the car enough so that the wheel is roughly two inches off the ground.

With your wrench, loosen and remove the wheel’s lug nuts and place them carefully into the small tray or bowl. After all the bolts have been taken off, grasp the tire and pull it off of the car’s axle. In some cases, the wheel may prove to be stubborn and may require a little more force.

Once it’s removed, gently slide the new winter tire in its spot. Place the bolts back on and use the lug nut wrench to tighten them simultaneously in a star shape. Make sure that all of the nuts are extremely tight before you lower the jack.

When you’re finished installing the first new winter tire, remove the jack and install the other three using the same method. Remember to stabilize the vehicle’s other wheels as you work and to make sure the lug nuts are securely tightened. When you are through, you’ll be left with a car that is sure to hold up against even the most treacherous of roads.
