New Storage Ideas For Unused Spaces

Most homes need more storage than they have, and in a smaller home storage is truly at a premium. Many people who live in mobile homes or apartments think that their only choice is to donate a large portion of their belongings to charity, but by being a little creative with storage solutions, this is not necessarily true. Most homes have wasted space somewhere and by using this space for storage, anyone can better organize their belongings. Here are some ideal storage spots in a home that are frequently overlooked.

1. The Door Store

Every door in the home has a back side and that means that every door is a potential storage area in the home. There are many organizers that are designed specifically to work on the back of a door. Some are already made while others are kits that are ready to assemble. Most hardware or home improvement stores have a variety of different selections for storage units that are designed to work in the space behind a door.

Organizers for behind the door come in two general types, shelves and pockets. In a kitchen or utility room shelves are probably most appropriate, whereas in a bathroom or bedroom the pocket style storage often works better. Both choices work very well, and they are easy to assemble and install.

2. Beneath a Bed

While simply stuffing things under the bed is not a particularly good storage solution, organizing the space and using it as storage is an excellent idea for storage. Use bins, totes, baskets, crates and boxes to keep everything organized and easy to retrieve. Some beds are taller than others, and there are also bed risers to raise a bed’s height and expand the available space for storage under the bed.

It is always a good idea to label storage containers, so that stored items can be easily found. By having a system of easy retrieval, there is less chance of items being shoved to the back reaches of the space never to be seen again. Under-the-bed storage works particularly well for off season clothing, shoes and toys. However, it can also work for blankets or tablecloths under a couch or hobby supplies under a chair.

3. Dual Use Furnishings

Another fantastic storage option is to find extra useable space inside the furniture. There are many different options available for furniture that can double as storage. For example, one of the more common selections is a coffee table that opens to reveal hidden storage. The same design works for ottomans, end tables and fish tank stands. An entertainment center is a great way to keep electronic components organized and stored away.

Many furniture makers create dual function furniture that is very useful in smaller living spaces. It is easy to store blankets or tablecloths in a coffee table storage unit. A fish tank stand with a build in cabinet underneath it can work as a linen closet storing towels or bathroom supplies. Using dual function furnishings is a great way to use every available inch of space in the home for storage in a very smart way.
