While most people would encourage kids to attend college and people would tell you that you are at a disadvantage if you did not attend a traditional four-year college, some would disagree. The truth is, there are plenty of job opportunities for those without four-year degrees. In many cases, those with specialized training instead of a general four-year degree will have more opportunity and a better chance at a higher paying job once they are living in the real world. They may still need training or specialized education, but because their learning focuses strictly on the career field they wish to enter, they may find it is easier to find work. College can be a great experience and it is the right choice for many. However, there are those that want to head right into the working world without spending years experiencing college. Others are unable to afford a traditional four-year education. Whatever the case, if you or your child wants to pass on a traditional four-year degree, there are still plenty of opportunities. Health care jobs are plentiful and often require just a few months of training. While you will not have the option of becoming a surgeon without years of schooling, you can find CNA jobs or jobs in CNA with a limited amount of affordable, specialized training.

Creative fields like art and performance may require training, but because they are talent-based, professionals often forgo traditional education. Artistic fields are competitive and those working in those fields want to focus strictly on their craft. There are educational opportunities for creative people who are non-traditional. Many of these institutions are more intense and competitive than traditional colleges, but they allow attendees to focus on their specific field. There are also plenty of opportunities for people to get hands-on experience in the fields without sitting in a classroom setting.

If you want to find a job that does not require you to attend four-years of college, consider learning a trade. You will need to be educated and you will need supervised work experience, but your education will be shorter, less expensive and will focus strictly on your trade. These jobs are often higher paying than those that require a four-year degree and many of the jobs are not affected by the ups and downs of the economy.

There are plenty of job opportunities for people who have specific life experience. Counseling jobs may require you to have training or be licensed, but the best counselors are those who can apply their own life experience. Organizing support groups and working with individuals with emotional or behavioral problems is an option for those who have not attended college but who have personal experience. Having experienced problems yourself does not automatically qualify you to support others, but if you have the right personality, you certainly stand a good shot at finding rewarding work.
