Using Nature Against Itself Can Clear the Garden of Pests

Anyone who has an insect in the garden which is called a stink bug will surely know it before too long. These creatures, so-called because they exude a smelly substance from the sides of their bodies, have a peculiar way of attracting a mate. Once the smell is in the air, the lady insects find this irresistible. Stink bugs can become a bit of a nuisance because of this smell since it attracts its predators and other pests onto our much valued plants in the process.

They have a good side, unfortunately, since they eat anything which destroys our gardens. This is a wonderfully natural way to keep pests balanced out. However, there is no telling if the new pests will actually eat the plants instead. Indeed, it is this little glitch which makes them unwelcome in gardens which have highly prized plants scattered around.

Since we now like to have plants right up to the sides of the house, these creatures will often find their way into dark places which are seldom used. Garages are the perfect spot for them and they will invade given half a chance. Since the house itself normally has nets on the windows and doors, it could invade through cracks and crevices around these openings so it may be a good idea to ensure that maintenance is kept up.

A cool way to discourage these creatures in the garden is to use the same chemical scent to draw them off to somewhere else. Those creatures that are in the mood to mate will surely be attracted to the fake trail and other predators will follow them too.

Alternatively, try putting in plants which they do not like, or populate the area with safe pests which feed on them. This is a wonderful method of controlling what is not wanted in the garden and it does mean that toxic chemicals are not being sprayed in places where pets may be snuffling around. Kids too are notorious for getting their fingers into all kinds of places and this could prove to be dangerous if care is not taken.

It may take some time to figure out what if the correct balance for any kind of creature which likes to hang around our gardens. Too much of anything is what puts nature out of sync, but the avid enthusiast will surely read up on the best methods to keep the place ‘green’.

For the gardener who just cannot get the balance right, try using chemicals which break down very quickly and which are non toxic. Although we are all used to quick fixes these days, we should remember that we are part of the whole plan and that we should not leave anything behind which will bring problems in the future. Toxic chemicals being sprayed on vegetables, for example, could come back to haunt not only our children, but our grandchildren too since we have no idea what effects they may have on us. Who would want to leave this kind of legacy behind?
