Why You Need Three Resumes

This article is written by Kevin Donlin. He is a prominent resume writer, researcher and online job assistance provider to his clients in five continents. In this essay he outlines the importance and features of preparing three different styles of CVs for job application. His essay article has been rephrased and presented below:

When you go on playing golf, you need your gear along with you. Having a driver and golf clubs is an essential part in the playing field, likewise for successful job searching. In today’s competitive job market, you need infact no fewer than three CV’s and this is a vital club for good job hunting.

These three resumes could be in three different forms: One for humans, a second for computer scanners, and a third for use on the internet.
Following are the features and importance of each type of Resume:

!) Traditional Format-for humans

This is the version which we are most familiar with. It’s the one or two page resume by using a nice piece of stationary and ink in order to have good appearance for the reader.

2) Scannable format-for Computers

Since managers at most of the large organizations do not have time to go through thousands of CVs in detail, it is a good idea to use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to scan the whole resume into computerized databases. In this way, they are available to the hiring manager with having few clicks of mouse and selecting few options. There are few things needed to be done in order to get a successful CV copy in Scannable format. First we would remove all the additional formatting in our text including underline, Italic font format. Then we select only Sans Serif fonts such as Arial (rather than using Serif fonts as Times New Roman) which are easier to scan. We use one formatting size throughout (9 or 10 is preferred). After that, a keyword section should be included in which a careful selection of keywords to be made for search criteria. The richer search keywords are in the CV, the more are the chances of getting an interview call. Sending the CV personally hand to hand or mail is appropriate as the formatted copy of CV (for human use) and copy for scanning purpose (for computer use) could led us to an interview call response.

3. ASCII format for e-mails and web sites:

ASCII is basically an abbreviation for the ‘American Standard Code’ for Information Interchange. ASCII is a general format text so it is recognized by any computer operating system. For creating an ANSII standard CV, the first step is to open the document in the Word window and; secondly saving it as a plain text document; in the third step close the document and we are done. Now the document is ready to use but we will have to make a maximum use of this CV by adding keywords in the CV which describes our education, job titles, experiences, or other skills.

Document when first created in the word should then always be updated and used by a text editor in order to avoid any garbage format in our plain text document. Selection of keywords in the keyword section must be given some consideration as if we are hiring manager who is looking for a candidate with specific qualities. For ASCII documents, the width of the document should not exceed 60 words as the longer width than 60 words would spoil the format of the text document. The mailing should be online submission on websites and emails.
