Mission Organization: Organizing Your Home Office Space

Whether you are working for home or not, it is important to have a well organized home office space. It is very frustrating to not find what you’re looking for when you need it the most. Put an end to your home office dilemma by starting to organize your files, gadgets, office supplies and things.

TIP # 1: CLEAR IT UP

The first thing to do is to clear your office. Throw out things that you no longer use. Get several boxes and label them as FILES, OFFICE SUPPLIES, RECEIPTS, OTHER KEEPS and TO GO. Put everything in its proper box. In this way you will not have a problem looking for them when you are finished organizing your office.

You could put the documents in the “FILES” folder into separate folders (also labeled) so you won’t get confused which document is which. This is the time to sort things out before putting them in their permanent positions.

Remove the dirt from your computer or printer wires. Be careful though. Be sure to unplug all electronics before cleaning them.

This is the part where you’ll put everything in its proper place. It is highly recommended to use colorful boxes to store in your files and things. This will give you a better way of telling where is which. Don’t forget to label each box too for easier distinction.

A certain color can be dedicated to your client’s files. Another would be for your suppliers documents. Next would be dedicated to your permits or bank statements. It’s really up to you. You have the freedom to maximize the use of these boxes. In addition, these colorful boxes also add beauty to the room. They add pops of color to the room. Strengthen it by adding curtains, pillows or rugs of the same color. Go for a solid color palette all through out the room.

TIP # 5: SEE THROUGH CONTAINERS

See through containers would be very useful in your home office. This is ideal for your office supplies. One could be for your pens and pencils. Next would be for your staples. The other one would be for your paper pins and clips. These transparent containers are best used for things that you frequently need to reach for.

TIP # 6: WOVEN BASKETS

Baskets can add a homey and sophisticated feel to your home office. It’s advisable to put your application forms, pamphlets and brochures here so that you can easily access them. Baskets come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Have fun in incorporating baskets to your home office design.

TIP # 7: THE TOP 3 MUST HAVES

A home office could never be without a calendar, a clock and a white board. These 3 things are the major components of every activity that will take place in your space.

TIP # 8: ELECTRONIC PLACEMENTS

Your computer, scanner, printer, fax machine and Xerox machine should not be placed so close to each other. They might over heat and cause fire. You can place them next to each other with an 8 inch gap.
