Grease Interceptors Help Prevent Blockages in Sewer Pipes

Grease interceptors are traps that help to stop grease from traveling through your pipes and into the the sewer system or septic tanks. If this is allowed to pass though, blockages can develop when the crude turns into a filmy solid sludge that does not break down easily, and collects in areas that does not allow other liquids to pass through. These oily substances can become a solid mass when they are cooled down.

Restaurants and commercial kitchens can produce enough of this crude on a daily basis that can quickly overwhelm a sewer treatment facility and cause filthy water to over flow and enter rivers, stream, and lakes. The result can be a shuttering of beaches and a prohibition of swimming if human waste enters the waterways, because of the blockages.

This kind of situation was bothersome to people living back in the days of the Victorian era, and their response was to develop systems that prevented this thickening substance from entering the sewer systems. They developed methods that reduced the amount of oils and fats from getting to the sewer lines.

What they did was develop traps that stopped grease in the lines that were completely dedicated to to the kitchen and no where else. These box like structures created a barrier that made the oils build up inside them when they settled to the bottom. Regular water go still flow over the top of the build up and enter the sewer lines. These units could be opened and cleaned on a regular basis when they started to fill up.

There are four types of grease interceptors used today, and each have their own limitations and capabilities. The most common are 50 gallon units that can remove 85 to 90 percent of the sludge that passes through it. These are common in smaller kitchen where there might only be a two or three bay sink.

Then there are the ground tanks that hold between 1000 and 2000 gallons that are useful for a restaurant, or a butcher shop. They can be made of concrete and can remove about 80 percent of the grimy substance. They will have to be pumped out if they get too full. There are also units called Grease Recovery Devices that work electronically to sweep the oil and fats into a container that can be removed for cleaning. These units get about 99 percent of the oily fats out.

The fourth device actually uses microorganisms to digest the fatty material to the point that it can safely enter the sewers without fear of causing blockage problems. There can be an automated sprinkling system, that releases the microorganisms, attached to the tank that keeps a regular cycle constantly going to maintain the system.

The items flowing from areas where animal products are butchered, prepared and eaten, can cause havoc on the sewer systems if allowed to build up and solidify. Grease interceptors are a proven method that can prevent this from happening, or at the very least, help minimize the impact the products can have on the environment.
