How to Save Money on Heating Bills

The price of heating a home has increased dramatically, due to rising energy costs. This is particularly difficult for the elderly and vulnerable. However there are various measures that you can take to reduce your bills.

With so many energy providers on the market, it is a good idea to shop around to see who offers the best deal. There are websites where you can check these with a few easy clicks. It is fairly straightforward to chance your provider.

It makes sense to wrap up warm during winter. There is no need to have the indoor temperature so high that you only need wear vest tops and shorts. So you could turn the radiators down a notch or two and instead wear an extra layer of clothing. Carpets and rugs also help to keep the house warm and cosy.

You could also turn the temperature down when the house is empty, or at night. Buy a good duvet that will keep you warm in bed. You can install a timer that does this for you into your central heating system. Make sure that your boiler is serviced every year. It could also be a question of updating your central heating system to a more modern and energy efficient one. A thermostat is also essential to monitor the levels of heat.

Radiators in rooms that are not being used, for example, a guest bedroom, can also be turned off completely. Draught excluders for doors and windows are relatively cheap. You could even make these yourself if you have a creative streak.

Keep doors and windows that you are not using closed. You could also try and tape these shut, with specialist tape that you can buy very cheaply. This stops heat escaping from the home and keeps it nice and cosy during the winter. Then, in summer its just a question of removing the tape.

Loft insulation can be done at a fairly reasonable cost, and it is a job that you can do yourself. You can buy rolls of loft insulation material at a good DIY store. Then its just a question of laying out the rolls.

Cavity wall insulation is another option. This needs to be done by a specialist builder. However, not all homes are suitable to have this installed, so this needs to be checked first. You can also search your home for any cracks in the walls where heat could be escaping, and fill these in with silicone.

If you are prepared to invest some money, you may want to consider solar panels in your home. This would mean an expensive outlay at the beginning, but the vast reduction in bills would make this very cost effective in the long run. And at the same time, you are doing your bit to help preserve our planet.

Whatever your financial circumstances, you can take positive steps to reduce heating bills. And you can still keep warm this winter whilst helping save the planet. Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of common sense.
