Some Deeper Implications of Pool Landscaping

Some people predict Sun spots and imminent climatic cataclysms on top of the economic turmoil collapse and natural disasters that have afflicted the world early in the twenty-first century. In the light of such events pool landscaping may seem otiose. On reflection though, it has its own deep significance.

When the whole world is shifting crazily in an earthquake it is good to have something to hold on to. A person\’s small private space that he has made his own is one such thing. Political ideologies of the early twentieth century tried to wrestle from people the right to private ownership and failed miserably. It is one of the most basic of human rights and those who were once denied private ownership understand best what it means for the culture and economy of a country.

The recent political and economic history of China is pertinent to a discussion of pool landscaping, unlikely though that may seem. The logical connection is that the economy of China was devastated during the Maoist regime when people were instructed to destroy things that were apparently irrelevant to economic progress like sparrows and flies. Eventually the genius of the people prevailed and the economy was rebuilt on exports. But recently it has become clear that growth can only be sustained if domestic demand is stimulated. Filters and pumps must be bought by Chinese people themselves.

When a suburban home owner decides to install a feature in his garden his decision has moral, intellectual and economic implications. His life and his aspirations may seem bleak, but his decision to beautify his personal space is a statement of faith in the future of himself and his community.

As a poet once pointed out, \’Beauty is its own excuse for being\’. Many artists and philosophers have agreed that the pursuit of beauty is a high calling that dignifies the people who search for it. Deciding to install a water feature and landscape the area around it can hardly have any mean or selfish motives associated with it.

Landscaping might have very little economic significance on a small scale but great importance in a symbolic sense. The energy and effort that is involved in any such enterprise represents the human endeavour that is the dynamo driving huge economies. This energy of motivated citizens, multiplied by the whole citizenry of a country is what creates demand and is the foundation upon which factories and banks are built.

A garden project exercises the mind in a significant way. The project must be planned, designed, analyzed and applied. When designing a pool one must stand back, look at the job objectively and imagine how it will look when it is completed. These are all intellectual exercises.

The successful landscaping of a pool will be the result of skill and knowledge. A designer must apply an understanding of perspective imagining what the pool will look like from different angles and points within a home. It is important that it should be in proportion to its surrounds and to the size of the house and garden. For example a very large pool in a small garden might seem absurd though it would be a good fit in a larger garden. Finally, when the project is complete, the surrounding plants, rocks or seating need to be in harmony with each other in terms of colour and form.
