A Great Solution: Dental Implants

For those who have lost a tooth or teeth due to extraction or injury; dental implants offer a strong and secure tooth substitute that looks and feels like the real thing. Dental implants, like the name itself indicates are secured into the bones underlying the gum tissue and provide a solid support system for prosthetic teeth. They are ideal for instances requiring replacement of a single tooth but can sometimes be used to support more teeth as well.

A dental implant is a small, metal insert usually made of titanium and shaped like a post or screw. It is intended to act as a replacement for a lost tooth root and give stability and support to an artificial tooth or teeth. Implants are also used to help keep bridgework and dentures more secure and prevent slipping, thus making it easier for the wearer to chew properly.

They are installed in the mouth through a dental surgery procedure which can be done by any dentist, oral surgeon, periodontist or prosthodontist who is trained and certified to do this kind of work. The level of skill and experience of the oral care provider will determine how long the operation takes to complete successfully.

Every patient\’s mouth is slightly different so it is important for the dental care technician to have an accurate picture of what they will be working with, in order for the procedure to be safe and effective. The technician normally takes a 2-D radiograph of the person\’s jaw and may also use computed tomography (CT) scanning, which is a special 3-D type of imaging that helps create a guide for them as to the exact locations where they should place the implants.

In order to install these devices, a hole is bored into the bone and the metal component inserted. For this to be undertaken successfully, there must be adequate bone thickness in the area. Quite often when a tooth is lost, significant bone loss occurs as well. One of the benefits of implants is that they actually encourage the further growth of bone as it actually grows around the metal part in a process called \”osseointegration\”.

After the operation, it is critical that the newly affixed implants are allowed to heal properly, in order for them to be secure and not come loose or shift. Generally most oral care providers prefer to wait between 2 to 6 months before attempting to load the prosthetic tooth or teeth onto the implant. If this is done too early, there is a risk that the implant will be pushed out of position as it has not had ample time to grow into the bone.

Unlike natural teeth, they cannot develop cavities but do still need to be cared for in the usual manner such as brushing, flossing and the like. Occasionally if proper oral hygiene isn\’t adhered to a condition known as \”peri-implantitis\” may occur involving inflammation of the gum and bone tissue around the implant. This is more commonly seen in smokers, it is best to avoid smoking if possible prior to and after surgery.

People who have lost a tooth or teeth should really consider dental implants; as long as they are installed carefully, they offer the next best thing to a natural tooth and can be permanent if cared for correctly.
