The impression is processed using a CT scan and from there a 3-dimensional computerized model is constructed according to the orthodontist\’s specifications. The movement of the teeth throughout the treatment process can then be simulated using a software program. From this, the series of plastic resin aligners for each stage of treatment is prepared and sent to the orthodontist.

The patient begins the treatment by wearing the aligner for a 2-week period and then switches to the next one in the series. Only an occasional check-up is required. The aligner can be removed while eating, drinking, or brushing the teeth but in order to be effective, it must be worn 20-22 hours per day. If it is not worn the minimum number of hours, the treatment period will be longer. Generally treatment lasts about 1 year but can be less in cases of minor malocclusion.

Not only are these clear braces more aesthetically appealing, but they are also a great convenience when it comes to eating. Traditional braces are not compatible with all types of food, especially things like corn-on-the-cob, but with invisalign eating habits can remain unchanged as the aligner is actually removed for eating and drinking.

Maintaining proper dental hygiene is considerably easier to do with invisalign. Unlike metal braces that are challenging to clean properly, these aligners require nothing more than simple brushing. Teeth keep healthier with them too because it is also easier to clean and floss them efficiently, and proper preventive dental care such as x-rays can still be carried out therefore reducing the incidence of tooth decay.

Other benefits of using these aligners are faster treatment completion and straighter teeth on average than with traditional treatments. For it to work effectively though the required number of hours or the next set of aligners will not fit and new impressions will need to be taken. Metal braces can also be uncomfortable and irritate the mouth, but these are smooth and much easier to get used to.
