Horse Fencing – Electric Fencing Might Be Right For You

There are many different type of containment structures you can use to keep your horses on your property. Electric horse fencing is a very specific type of fencing that you may or may not want to consider. It will depend on the climate you live in, the type of soil that is on your property and how you want to keep the fence charged.

Basically, there are two essential components to electric fencing. One of the components send the current out and the other component is the negative or neutral element that provide for a complete circuit of electricity. There is a line that the energy runs through that runs around the enclosure. The negative or neutral elements are made up of the negative terminal portal on the charger and all the conductors that are connected to it.

At that point, it is a complete circuit. When the animal touches the fence it essentially shortens the circuit and becomes the conduit for the electricity. The current will travel through the animal\’s body and down out their hooves into the ground and back to the terminal to complete the circuit. For this to work though, the ground must have a certain amount of water in it for the electricity to travel.

This is why grounding and the terminal charger (or energizer) are the most important components in this system. Without proper grounding the current will stop before it gets to the terminal. If the charger is faulty there will be little to no electrical current going through the conduit wires.

Installing the grounding correctly the first time will save you time and money later on. Improper ground is one of the most common cause for ineffective electric fencing. To solve this you can do several things. Add more grounding rods, get a more powerful charger terminal or you can run a neutral wire six inches away from the active wires and when the animal touches both at the same time it will put for an effective charge.

There are three ways you can run your energizer. You can use batteries, plug it in to an electrical outlet or use a solar panel. Batteries run out and need to be replaced or charged, which can be expensive and there can be significant down time if it goes unnoticed. An electrical source can be very inconvenient to hook up to. The solar powered energizer collects sun energy all year long even in cloudy weather. It is a reliable and secure choice to power your energizer.

These units are designed to deliver constant power to your fence for long periods of time, even in cloudy weather. Perhaps you\’ve had the experience where your electric fence energizer was damaged by lightning. This does happen and solar powered chargers are much less susceptible to lightning damage.

Another common problem with energizers are power surges between the main source of energy and the fence system. Solar powered chargers just do not fail this way. They can\’t because they are not hooked up to the main electrical energy source. So, if you are thinking about electrical horse fencing to enclose your property solar powered energizers are the way to go.
