When Traditional Dieting Does Not Work

Diet has been the solution to losing weight for years. People cut their calories and exercise, usually seeing fairly quick results. Fad diets are one of the most popular ways to lose weight because people can achieve results in just a few days. The trouble is weight loss such as this does not usually last very long. If you cut your calories and eliminate most of the food you are eating, the pounds will fall off. As soon as you begin eating those foods again the pounds return. Though you might feel as if you have made strides in your weight loss goals, you have lost mainly water and muscle weight, resulting in an unhealthy body.

The key to successful weight loss is long-term healthy eating. Adding fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet means you are filling up on low-calorie foods. This leaves little room for fatty, high-calorie foods. Learning what foods are healthy and which are not is a big step toward living a healthier life. Many of the old rules about eating no longer apply. You need to understand what is in the food you are eating and when you can, eat foods that are fresh and prepared in your own home.

If you make sensible diet changes, but it does not result in weight loss, there might be a more serious problem. Some people\’s bodies do not respond to diet changes the way they should. If you find that after several weeks of eating the right foods your weight has not dropped you should speak with your doctor about the issue. He or she might want to conduct some medical tests to determine what is changing in your body. Sometimes the problem is exchanging fat for muscle mass. Muscle weighs for more than fat, so you might not see a change on the scale. However, the shape of your body should be changing. Your doctor should be able to tell you if you are suffering from a health problem that affects weight loss.

Once you know there are no serious health threats, you can begin to eliminate certain foods from your diet. Sometimes our bodies are so used to salt, sugar, and preservatives, they hold onto body fat because they are not functioning properly. When you drastically change eating habits, your body goes on alert. If your diet has been especially bad for year, it might take a few weeks for it to adjust to new, healthier eating.

Finally, consider fasting. If you are healthy and trying to jumpstart a fitness and weight loss plan, fasting can really provide your body the boost it needs. You need to choose which type of fast is best for your body. It might be as simple as a one-day fast to get you feeling better and focused on healthier eating. Others find they need a fast of a week or more. Once you feel that your body is cleansed and your food addictions are broken, you can begin to add in the healthiest foods available. Some people even continue their fast with fruit and vegetable juices, or only raw foods for several weeks following the initial fast. If regular dieting has failed you, there are still plenty of options.
