Guide to Cleanse a Drain Without Bothering Plumbers

Blocked drains are no fun for anyone, and it can often be impractical or too expensive to call out plumbers to the home. But a drain can be unclogged using a readily available tool.

Many people\’s first reaction will be to resort to drain cleaning chemicals, but this is not necessarily a process everyone wants to follow. Some are uncomfortable with handling chemicals, while other people may not feel so good about the idea of releasing potentially toxic materials into the environment.

A simple tool known as a plumber\’s mate, or more usually a plunger, is one way of clearing a blocked drain, and should be sufficient for most simple blockages. This is the famous implement which has a large rubber sucker, or suction cup, attached to a handle of some kind, most often in the past made from wood but more usually now from plastic or metal, depending on the quality.

The first step to the process is to ensure that there is standing water in the basin of the drain. Without this, the process will not work properly. This water should not be too deep, about 8 centimetres or three inches or so.

The next thing to do is to make sure that any related drains close by are sealed in some way. This will mean that the vacuum created by the water which is standing in the drain can shift the material which is causing the blockage in the system.

Next, cover the drain opening with the plunger\’s rubber sucker, ensuring that the suction cup covers the while opening. When it feels like it has stuck properly, it needs to be pushed and pulled vigorously in order to shift the matter which is causing the obstruction.

The important thing to do here is to make sure that the plumber\’s mate is kept moving; push and pull the handle with equal vigour. After a few minutes, remove the plunger and see if the standing water in the drain has begun to diminish.

The process may need to be repeated several times before any positive result is obtained. However, once the obstruction is cleared, the change may well be quite sudden, with the block shifting and the water diminishing very swiftly. Repeat the process, removing the plunger from the drain completely each time the process is complete.

If a plunger is being used to unclog the drain pipe of a sink or a bath then it is essential to cover the overflow exits which are a part of the structure of most bathroom sinks and baths. Making sure that there is water on both sides of the sink or bath will also make for better results. Plugging the overflow with a cloth of some kind often creates the best conditions for the process of plunging to work with best effect.

Plumbers\’ mates are available from hardware stores and are not an inexpensive tool to acquire. Having one handy can ensure that many blocks, whether in household drains, the kitchens or the bathroom, do not result in having to call out the real plumbers.
