How to Pack a Self Storage Locker

The best way to pack a self storage locker is to begin by getting organized. First, a person should take inventory of all their belongings and then place them in boxes. At the locker, they should put the larger items in the back and use up all available space. Anything they might need access to should be put in the front area of the unit. The entire process is a matter of logistics and planning. If time is taken for forethought, people will be able to make efficient use of the space and keep their property in good condition.

Before someone heads off to their storage unit, they should first make a list of what they will be storing. This will make it easier to remember what they have put in the unit. It will also allow them to plan how to fill the space in the most efficient way.

After figuring out what will be put inside the locker, its time to prepare the items to be stored. Everything should be put into boxes. If feasible, one should try using boxes of the same size. By having them be identical, the logistics of stacking will be simpler.

When filling the unit, start by putting the larger objects like furniture in the back. Beds and mattresses should be stood up against the wall. Stack the furniture on top of each other and make use of space by turning the seats of chairs against one another. People should stack everything up to the ceiling.

If there is space left between the furniture and the ceiling, then begin stacking boxes. The heavier ones should go on first. This will prevent smaller boxes from getting crushed under the weight.

While filling the unit, one should always be paying attention to how space is being filled. As boxes are getting stacked, it should look like a vertical puzzle being put together. Start at one side and go to the other on the bottom row. Then, put in the second layer. This will make everything fit together into a wall. As things pile higher, a person will want to have a step ladder handy so they can reach the uppermost area. The top part should be saved for soft objects and pieces which are irregularly shaped.

Outdoor equipment may get stored in a person\’s locker. When this occurs there are a couple of things to keep in mind. People should make sure power equipment like lawnmowers have had their fluids drained. The fumes can cause health and fire hazards. Any smaller tools should be put inside of trash can to keep track of them. Plus, cumbersome tools like rakes and shovels should be tied together to prevent clutter.

Self storage lockers are a convenient way to clear space in one\’s home and put away items during a move. However, if a person stores their belongings in one of these units without some planning they could be asking for trouble. By taking time to get organized beforehand, they can make the filling up of the unit easier and keep there possessions in good condition.
