Important Information For Amateur Fly Fishing Anglers

If you have watched movies like “A river runs through it” or just driven by a trout stream and watched the anglers gently wetting their flies and thought it looked like fun, you may want to consider trying fly fishing. Fly fishing is not difficult, but it does require some skills and knowledge to keep from hooking yourself. If you approach fly fishing with an open mind and the awareness its called fishing, not catching, you will have fun.

Acquiring the basic equipment is the first step. Fly fishing equipment is like automobiles, there are the yogos and the Rolls Royce’s. A brand new driver really can’t tell the difference between the two until driving the yogo for a while and then driving the Rolls. If you crash a yogo, you won’t feel as bad as if you crash a Rolls and most beginning drivers will crash. With that in mind, don’t spend a lot on top of the line equipment. In fact, if you can buy used equipment it would be even better. You will be able to get a good quality for a great price.

After you get your equipment, you need to practice casting. You can do this in any open area. A park or parking lot works fine. Fold a piece of paper into a 1 by 1 1/2 inch piece and tie to the end of the tippet. Then start casting. A back cast should put the tip of the rod in the 2 o’clock position and a forward cast put the tip of the rod in the 10 o’clock position. Strip out about 10 or 12 feet of line and cast. Say it to yourself as you cast 10, 1000, 2, 1000, 10, 1000, 2, 1000 and … This helps you get the rhythm to cast in and out.

Once you have your cast mastered you’re ready to go to the water. The best place to start is a lake that doesn’t have trees or bushes around it. Catching trees and bushes is frustrating for a new angler as well as an experienced angler. It is best to start with a dry fly. Even if the conditions are not right. It takes a little practice to lay out a good cast and a dry fly will help you see what you are trying to accomplish. It is, however, best if you go out on a day that is calm, without wind. Wind will totally mess up your cast. You will have plenty of time to master casting in windy conditions later on, but for a beginner it is no fun at all.

When you have mastered casting a dry fly onto a calm lake you are ready to move on and really begin fishing. You will need to have the right flies for the area you want to fish. The best way to accomplish this is to ask the guy at the fly shop in the town closest to where you want to fish. He’ll be able to get you the right patterns as well as the right size of flies to use. He\’ll also give you some tips for presentation, if you ask.

These tips will help you get started wetting a line with the possibility of catching a few. Relax and have a good time.
