When Considering Proper Computer Recycling

Computer recycling is something any family will at some point have to think about. Unfortunately these old machines are thrown out with the rest of the trash and wind up in incinerators or landfills. Neither is a good option since computers are built using heavy metal components and they can easily pollute water, land or the breathable air.

Those with old unit sitting around or being hidden in a closet out of sight should see if there is anything they can salvage. Your newer system will yield more salvageable parts but look to save DVD burners and network cards as hardware you may need in the future. In the case of memory cards or hard drives keep them only if you know you will use them in the future otherwise they can be disposed.

Computers are filled with cables, ignore these since cost of new cables is almost nothing and the chances you will ever need any of those cables are slim. Those planning on building a computer for fun should consider keeping the CPU. Otherwise dispose them, newer models drop in price rapidly so keeping it serves little good.

Old hard drives contain data you may have forgotten is on there, take the time to erase this data. There are free programs available on the internet that will make the proper erasing of hard drives a breeze. In the case that your old system no longer powers on remove the hard drive and destroy it or securely erase it using another machine.

Throwing out that old computer is the easiest thing to do but you may want to consider reusing it or re-purposing it. An older machine can be used as a media server or even be connected to your television and serve as a home theater PC. Others may want to keep it for use offline running word processor or spread sheet programs.

Before deciding on disposal consider donating that old system instead. Charities and schools will usually be willing and glad to take older computers. You can always ask family and friends if they would have any use for your old PC. Some older folks can use the machine to not only learn on but for email and other simple tasks. If your system is older, search for clubs that are devoted to it. Many collectors are always on the look out for certain classic PC\’s they can add to their collection.

All of these options may end up leading no where and you are left with getting rid of the system. In this case check your town or cities disposal department to find out if they take old computers and recycle them. Many have special sections set aside for old PC\’s and other electronic equipment. If your town lacks this option go online and look for recycle options there. Some sites will send you a prepaid label so you can send them your old system for recycling.

Computer recycling is an important environmental step one should not over look. Look at your old machine and see if there are any parts you can potentially salvage. Take time to erase all data securely on your old hard drive before getting rid of it. Call your town or cities disposal department to find out if they offer recycling options.
