According to experts, self-defenses classes are useless if you fail to follow the principles governing them. Below are the basic tenets of self-defense.

Individuals should be aware and be familiar of the basic tenets of self-defense to avoid uncertain circumstances that would be detrimental to them. They should also be aware that these principles are not assurance that they will be protected from harm, but it just some sort of reminders on how to keep away from possible traps set by criminals.

The five tenets of self-defense:

1. Awareness – You should be aware of your environment and the people living within it. If you noticed an unfamiliar person in your vicinity with questionable movements, you should be cautious because majority of perpetrators normally pick their victims casually in different areas. Some criminals follow their victims for day to familiarize their schedule and movements. They look for ways on how they can attack their victims effectively.

2. Communication – Do not talk to strangers. Avoid talking to strangers who are offering you a ride or a life to your place. With the rising cases of crimes nowadays, you cannot just trust anybody just because he is offering you a lift or a ride. If he insists on his demands, be sure to ask help from the nearby police authorities.

3. Attention – If you are captured, be sure to get the attention of other people around you. Your perpetrator is aware that when you scream, he cannot pursue his plans anymore.

4. Weapons – If you have some self-defense weapon on your bag or your pocket, be sure to use it correctly. You can target his throat, groin or abdomen. By using these tools, you can increase your chances to escape and ask for assistance. By knowing how to use different types of improvised weapons and your self-defense weapons at hand, you can increase your chances of overcoming him.

5. Barrier – By having a barrier in between you and the attacker, you can have enough time to think and plan on how you can escape or how you can protect yourself. If you are inside your car and your attacker in outside, be sure to keep the car and window’s closed to make it difficult for him to get inside.

These are the basic self-defense principles which can help you during emergencies.
