How To Select The Best Tools

Tools enable people to extend the abilities of the human body, and perform tasks otherwise not possible. Although there are other tool-using species – chimpanzees, sea otters and certain birds amongst others, no other earthly creature can complete with the vast range of tools used for such widely differing purposes by human beings.

There is such a wide range of specialized equipment available for metalworking, wood working and general construction, each with particular advantages and disadvantages, that choosing the best for a job can be a very difficult decision. Of course, there are multi-purpose items which can be used in many different fields, such as simple manually operated hammers and screwdrivers and others of the ilk, right up to extremely sophisticated equipment. Each has its uses – and its price.

Perhaps the best approach is to build up a collection of general-purpose tools, including simple manual equipment, which is supplemented by more specialized items as the need arises. This is facilitated, for instance, by the many cordless items available. The better manufacturers offer a wide variety of cordless tool which all use a common rechargeable battery for the tool. The best option must be where they are also backward compatible with old batteries and the newer chargers can handle both Li-Ion and Ni-Cad batteries, reducing expenses considerably. This makes excellent sense, as the batteries are both the most expensive part of the system and also have the shortest useful life, so the system reduces the expense of replacing a wide variety of different batteries from different manufacturers. A further payoff for loyalty to a manufacturer is that the cost of each additional item of equipment is cut by being able to buy tool configurations.

If this sort of approach is adopted (and it makes sound common sense) then quality and range available in the tool becomes an important issue. Most of the manufacturers are committed to good quality (within practical price limitations) and the question then becomes more a question of such intangibles, like factors such as warranties and local support, as well as the availability of spares, This applies generally to all electrical equipment of course. All too often cheap products seem quite competitive with better quality equipment – until something goes wrong. But this can happen in the case of expensive equipment as well, where local support is lacking.

Perhaps it is felt that cordless netter meets to requirement, especially if continuous work is required. However, many professionals have switched to cordless equipment because of their convenience (they can be used in the absence of nearby power sources) and portability as well as developments in extending battery life before recharging becomes necessary. Cordless items usually come with at least two batteries now, so one can be recharged while the other is in use.

So even if initial requirements may seem very limited, it pays to take a longer-term view of the purchase decision and to standardize as much as possible where appropriate. An extensive search of reviews of all items in a tool is useful in making a good decision based on an overall perspective. Personal factors such as geographical location and probable future requirements are important aspects of any reasoned purchase decision involving tools.
