Is a Starvation Diet the Quickest Way to Lose Weight?

The starvation diet is a pretty simple idea really, if you don\’t eat or eat very little, you can\’t gain weight. But if this is your idea of the quickest way to lose weight, you\’re heading down the wrong path. Starving yourself is not one of the best weight loss ideas, it can have very harmful effects.

A Starvation Diet – 4 Good Reasons to Say No

#1. Results Don\’t Last

You definitely will lose weight by depriving your body of calories, that\’s for sure. But any weight you do lose from a starvation diet will likely return, in fact you\’ll probably end up gaining more weight than you wanted to lose in the first place!

Why? Because when you starve yourself, the body\’s metabolism actually slows down, and may stay that way for a while, so when you do start eating again the calories burn off even slower than before and the pounds pile on that much faster. You also tend to make poor food choices when you do eat, eating foods higher in fats, salt and sugars… because you\’re hungry!

#2. Starvation Dieting Slows Fat Loss

Because your body\’s metabolism slows down during this extreme dieting, your body will actually hold on to any stored fat for survival (starvation mode), feeding instead on lean muscle tissue if the starving is continued. Lean muscle mass encourages healthy weight loss, so any loss of this lean muscle mass only hinders future weight loss even more. The body\’s production of thyroid hormones together with other hormones that serve to promote healthy fat loss are also diminished, again further restricting the desired fat loss.

Our body needs the nutrients found in healthy foods to stay healthy and strong.

#3. A Starvation Diet is Bad for Your Physical Health

A very important reason to stay away from starvation dieting is your physical health. This form of dieting when continued can often lead to serious eating disorders such as Anorexia, Bulimia or even a compulsive eating disorder.

Because you\’re depriving the body of necessary nutrients, many physical ailments can result.

Overall fatigue, muscle weakness, and osteoporosis are the good ones. Heart and kidney failure are among the more serious. Your body is more likely to suffer virtually any physical problem if this starvation is kept up, our body\’s need the nutrients that food supplies, plain and simple!

#4. Emotional and Mental Problems

People who use the starvation diet are also much more prone to mood swings and the symptoms of depression. Anger issues, poor concentration, anxiety, memory loss and even hallucinations and food obsessions have been seen. The brain needs the essential nutrients found in healthy foods as much or more than the body, and will suffer when it is deprived.

Adopting a healthy eating plan, also known as a healthy diet -is by far the best form of diet to have. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, nuts, beans and peas, in healthy moderation as well as keeping the body well hydrated with plenty of water, is the long-term solution to weight loss and good health.
